Question for E92 to F82 Owners....

So I am quite intrigued by the new M4 of course, but being that I am head over heels for my current E92 M3, I will have a tough decision coming up with the lease coming up soon, and the obvious front runner to replace it is the new M4. Dare I say though that I am not too crazy about the styling... Just seems a little bit toned down compared the the E92... At the same time, I can't think of any other car to replace my E92 other than the F82...

Can any of you guys that switched out your E92's for F82's give me your first impressions about the car? How do the two compare in your opinion, etc. I know that F82 is an overall better car in so may ways... Just wanted to hear a little more in depth impressions from you guys.

Thanks....

Have you been reading the forum for the past few months? There is a Library of Alexandria worth of info on exactly the topic you have raised.

The E92 does NOTHING better, including sound better IMHO. Stock for stock, the F8X even sounds better. The E9X sounded like a lawnmower off the floor but really came to life with an aftermarket upgrade. The F8X is just a superior machine all around. When I drive my E92 I remember why I liked it, but it makes me love my F8X even more.

If you regret getting an F8X to replace your E9X, you may be one of the first I've seen here.

I'm thinking about making the switch too but from e92 to f80, as a family car, because baby on The way. I'm wondering since my e92 is zcp would I regret getting the non zcp version. I think my current e92 is pretty nice handling and sharp. How does a zcp compare to f80 regular with adaptive suspension?

I'd like to keep the e92 as we'll but over the past 4 years of ownership I've only put on 23k miles so with too many cars and time getting less it may be redundant or pointless.

The F8X in non-ZCP is a better handling car, IMO, than an E92 with ZCP.

agree.

OP and everyone else who is considering the swap. Try and find a dealer who will let you test drive one and you will be able to really feel and see the difference. I will warn you though once you drive one you will be hooked. I have had 5 e92M3 and when I made the switch over to the f82M I was VERY happy. Each day I drive the car it gets better and better IMO.

E92 M3 to M4

Hi, I was at work and was having a nice discussion with a radiologist friend of mine (he drives a 2003 E46 M3 and a 2012 Nissan GTR) about the new M4. It was his opinion that the reviews from Europe have not been that great with respect to the new M3/M4. His main point was that the car was "overpowered" so to speak and the chassis cannot handle the torque and HP of the S55 and the car can be difficult to control and overall handling is worse when compared to the E92. He described the M4 more as a "muscle car".

I have been watching a lot of online reviews (mostly from the states and a few from Britain) and these reviews have been very positive.

I currently have a 2011 E92 M3 which I sorta bought impulsively before I knew a lot about m cars and I have regrets about the cars configuration but overall have been very happy with the car. I am going to be in the market for a new car in the next year or so and am looking for some honest opinions from people who have made the transition from the e92 m3 to the M4 regarding the M4 compared to the E92 M3.

I still think the M4 offers the most "bang for the buck" so to speak. I am planning on looking at the 911, GTR, C63 AMG, M4 and possibly a few others for my next car. I really like what I have read so far about the m4 but I'm not sure ...

I have read a few of the reviews here.

Thanks in advance!

Well, I haven't owned the E92 M3, but have driven my ortho friend's coupe in 2009 when he got it new. Loved it but always wanted more torque...

A heart surgeon friend of mine owns a heavily Dinan modified E46 M3 with SMG and he drove my M4 the other day and absolutely loved it. I don't feel the car is overpowered.

You definitely need to drive around all the cars you mentioned above and form your own opinion, but GTR and any 911 decently optioned and worth competing with the M4 will be over 100k. Not sure about the C63 AMG.

If you already have an experience with the E92 M3, I honestly think you will love the F82! Good luck with your quest!

My view...

Your friend is very incorrect relative to his perception that the E92 is a better handling car than the F82. It isn't. My M4 is more stable, less oversteer and better planted through corners. Yes, you need to manage the torque but that is simply a function of not treating the throttle as an on/off switch. Having said that, the car is overpowered relative to the tires... the car begs for stickier rubber. The car is far from feeling like a muscle car... you can tell him I said so

In my opinion, the F82 is an improvement on the E92 in most every respect except maybe sound. Some will say steering feel too but I don't agree. The interior is much nicer. Seats are better. Brakes are better. Car is lighter. It is a much faster car in a straight line and faster at the track. I loved my E92 M3 but I haven't looked back since getting the M4.

I think the C63 (coupe version anyway) would be a real contender for your dollars too. The sedan version isn't a great looking car (IMO only) but the coupe shows real promise.

I'm scratching my head trying to figure out why anyone would care what your friends do for a living when it is completely irrelevant. FYI, unless they are pro drivers no one gives a shit. "My friend" will suffice as a descriptor.

Ya, honestly when it comes to opinions from friends, it's just that, their opinion.

You will never know about a car until you drive it for yourself. If you own a E92, just test drive a M3/M4, or even request and hope they allow you to run it a bit harder. Hell it's gonna be a year soon so maybe they will allow it.

My point is, never trust friends opinions, or even reviews. Take all of them with a grain of salt and go find out for yourself and figure it out if you think there is a difference or not.

Not technically true. If his friend was Derek Jeter, we'd be interested. Or maybe if it was a plastic surgeon, we could demand to see pics of his work. But heart surgeons...meh.

Funny you should say that.....cause I did drive it and was more convinced than ever that I DID NOT WANT to get rid of my e92 w/ zcp.

I have a track event coming up and will have an opportunity to spend extensive time in the F80 (the one I would get because I have 1 kid with another on the way and not in the mood for two cars right now). That day will be the deciding factor.

I own my e92, but would never own again, so will lease the F80 if I am impressed after track day.

Cheers,
e46e92
