Difference between Sport and just moving the lever to the left?

I have a 2014 335xi, no DHP
If the shifter is just flicked to the left, does it engage Sport mode?
Or is it something esle, I know its manual mode if you choose to do change gears bit is it also Sport?

Is the Sport/+/Comfort independent of the gear position?

I do like that it displays the gear your in if you move the shifter to the left

I am not very sure about this but here's my take.
Shifter in left puts the transmission into sports/ i notice the gear shifts being snappier with a thud and also allows for easy use of paddles and just flicking the shifter back into the right to go back into auto. ( does not alter steering ratio/stability/dsc)

edit : so i didnt really answer your question. The short answer is no all it does is puts the gearbox in the most aggressive setting. I usually avoid it and just use sport/sport + .
