Flashing !!
ok calm down , its not about that kinda flashing
what i want to know is are any of you with the HID Zenon lights ( standard on e92 ) getting constantly flashed by other cars in the dark to turn your lights off full beam when they are on dip .... this is really starting to annoy me i also had this problem in my 1.20d ( which had HID as a option btw ) i assumed then it must be badly set ( high set ) lights from the factory, as you cant adjust them manually. But now i have the e92 im getting exactly the same problem.... and its getting dam annoying ... i find myself unconciously reaching for the lights to flash back at any approaching car after they dazzle me. anyone else get this ? |

They could be just admiring your fantastic car. Anyway more seriously, its unlikely that BMW have failed to set the drivers side light to the proper angle so we can exclude that as the cause.
The E92 has automatic headlight level control dependent on the angulation of the car relative to the road. However, the system does have a distinct delay and therefore if you drive up a hill, those approaching from a lower position will get blasted with xenon rays. |

Actually i noticed that Naughty Nick's lights were a darn sight brighter and more "vertical" than mine ?
Is there not an overall adjuster somewhere ? SJ |

There is an adjuster for the E92 Xenons which effectively sets the maximum level of the beam attainable through automatic level adjustment. But you need to park the car a specific distance from a proprietary grid which allows you to optimise the setting. Adjusting the settings yourself could completely ruin optimum coverage of the road/roadside.

I'll just stand the miswah 100 yards away and when she squeals, the level ' l be about right. SJ |

I dont know the exact location of the adjuster, I have not yet got my own E92. My best mate with a 320d had this same problem and it was because the xenons were not configured for left hand lane (UK) usage. So he somehow watched BMW adjust his lights for UK driving and then recalibrate the maximum height of the beam. |

The 335d we have know is the third BMW we've had with xenons and never had the problem. The last e46 had both xenons fail (at different times) and when one light unit was replaced it's beam was displaced. The dealer re set it easily so adjustment is obviously possible. It's seems strange that you could have had two cars with their lights set high. Regards Chris

Hi Chris I've never been flashed, in fact I've always thought my lights were set too low, so I raised them about 2k miles ago and still not been flashed.
I only guessed at the amount I raised them by, but I'm happier with the new range, I still think main beams shite though. |

Mine too, I'm wondering if on the E46 they parked up when the ignition was switched off, and on the E90/92 they are left pretty much in the right place, unless the load changes. I've not got my car with me today, so I can't check |

The beam rises & then lowers slightly. You can see it easily if you're parked facing a wall, garage door etc. As for the xenon self-levelling, it works continuously during driving, but only in order to keep the beam pointing at the correct angle. For any given load in the car, the beam will re-adjust in the vertical plane, based on acceleration & deceleration. It has nothing at all to do with going up hills & 'levelling' at that point, unless of course you actually accelerate over the hill to such a degree, that the beam needs to be automatically levelled downwards- perhaps that's why your car doesn't blind everyone, Carslosh? Braking as you approach a hill will have the opposite effect, causing the beam to automatically level upwards. Viv |
