I had a bad day!

Can't believe this happened. I was the last car in a 3 car pile up. Nothing I could do but still condsidered my fault in Mass. Gotta love it. Car will never be the same.

That sucks. But, the repair might not be too bad. Looks like the airbags did not go off and the damage looks like it's virtually all to parts that can be fairly easily replaced. Hope all goes well.

What a bummer.

I think California is like Mass; if you rear end somebody, its your fault. I think the logic is that if the driver of the car following is paying attention and not tailgating, that driver could stop in time regardless off what happens in front.

Hope you can get it fixed back to new condition.

Pic fixed. Yeah, but I wasn't tailgating. I was a few car lengths back when I saw smoke from the squeeling tires and heard the screech of rubber. The first car said they had to stop suddenly and I don't think the second car was paying attention at all. Just sucks when you treat your car like a baby then this happens.

That sucks, I can't imagine how badly you feel
The car does seem to have mainly cosmetic damage, I'm guessing the car in front of you was also a fairly new high performance car
Good luck

@f30coyote

Ih, that really sucks.
As the others posted, it does look mainly like cosmetic damage and shouldn't have any influence on driving behaviour once it's fixed...

BTW, did you by any chance have the option (I don't remember how it's called now) that brakes for you?
On my car, I get a red flashing car on the HUD, then the car brakes as well.
I'm curious to see if that actually intervened and lowered the severity of the crash?

Dang

At least you weren't injured. Cars are always replaceable. It kinda sucks that you are automatically considered at fault.

That's the issue right there... safe gaps are measured in time, not distance, since higher speeds require larger gaps.

2 seconds is a good safe gap, and a few car lengths is only safe up to 15-16mph.

Good thing no one was hurt, and hope your car gets repaired quickly!

Massachusetts is terrible for this, I was just involved in a similar incident although less damage and months ago.

Be sure to document all the evidence you can, so that you may appeal the surcharge points and not be found at fault.

On a side note, I have a 2013 328 Estoril M sport so if you seem me around in MA, give a friendly wave!

Ahh sorry to see that. But, as other have said don't fret - its just a car and it'll be pretty much the same as before once its repaired!

WHile it does look to be only cosmetic- it will probably affect the cooling system- just make sure it is put back together correctly and you should be fine- had the same thing happen with a deer on my old 330 E46.

No, no special braking system in my car. Just me. I suppose my reflexes are not as good as they used to be!

I will be sure to wave if i see you. Driving around in a Chevy cruze for a little while...

Luckily my insurance is giving me accident forgiveness. I've been a liberty mutual customer forever without an at fault accident. I won't get a surcharge but I will lose my safe driver discount for 2 years. They will let me adjust the primary driver around to minimize the impact too. Luckily my wife is still qualifies for safe driver.

Yes, radiator needs replacing and likely the ac condenser. I will hopefully check it all out tomorrow when it finally gets to the body shop. At the impound yard now... I couldn't get the hood open before they towed it.

Sorry to hear that. I had a similar accident a few years ago, but I was the middle car. 2 cars ahead stopped short and guy behind me pushed me into the car in front. I had similar damage, plus driver's door and rear taillights, bumper, and muffler. Was around $3k in damage, but body shop was great and car was as good as new afterwards. Had it for another 20k miles with no real issues or signs of the crash. Had to close the door with just a little more force, that was it.

Sorry man, I feel your pain... I had a similar situation happen to me a few years back when I had my 350z and "technically" it was my fault.

I live in South Boston, let me know if you want to whip mine around while yours is in repair

Good thing about accident forgiveness, though. The points could have costed you several thousands more over the coming years.

Yes it's the law here in CA as well, that if you are the rear ender you're at fault. But as we all know, just try and leave a reasonable distance between you and the car in front. Just try and see all the Priuses cut in front.

This is not a Mass or California thing. This is a physics thing. If I am following at a safe distance and paying attention, I should not hit the car in front of me except 1) if a driver swerved in front of me and slams on his/her brakes, or 2) the car behind me slams into me and pushes me into the car in front of me. If I am not leaving a reasonable distance to make sure that Prius or Honda Civic (insert annoying car of your choice here) does not cut me off and take MY space, then I increase the chance of hitting the car in front of me. So, technically, physically, actually, and legally, its my fault.
