Liqui Moly Diesel Smoke Stop: Reduces Diesel Soot

Check this out - LM has a product available in Europe that claims it accelerates the oxidation/reduction of soot, (i.e. carbon.) Remember what soot is: Soot /ˈsʊt/ is impure carbon particles resulting from the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soot

Thoughts/Comments? Shoot - this stuff is made in Germany specifically intended for our German diesels! It's like salsa made in San Antonio by people who know salsa!

Diesel Smoke Stop Concentrate

Diesel Smoke Stop is a highly effective diesel fuel additive with an important state-of-the-art effect. The product reduces soot emissions from diesel engines by accelerated soot combustion. Diesel Smoke Stop considerably improves the environmental compatibility of diesel passenger vehicles and trucks and prevents odor pollution and impairment of visibility. Diesel Smoke Stop also keeps engines and injectors clean, prevents seizing of injector needles, maintains engine performance and reduces the frequency of repairs.

http://www.liqui-moly.de/liquimoly/p...cument&land=GB

Can't find it for sale in the US, but can get it on Ebay.UK
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LIQUI-MOLY...-/290603807132

Their Diesel Smoke Stop claims it's safe on all DPF's, too.

Diesel Smoke Stop

Accelerates soot burn-off and reduces exhaust smoke. Reduces emissions and odor nuisance. Completely effective right after adding. Cleans the diesel injection system and makes the engine run smooth. Optimizes the emission test values.

Intended use
For all diesel engines both with and without diesel particulate filters – especially suitable for preventative use. Turbocharger tested. For adding directly to the fuel tank. Optimal effect by adding every time you fill up. Perfectly compatible with all conventional diesel and biodiesel fuels. Can contents are sufficient for up to 50 l fuel.

It's a detergent pkg.

Per the MSDS.
Ferrocene, controls soot.
Ethylbenzene and Xylene - mild cetane improver but good solvents to clean off varnish, paraffin waxes.

Power Service is similar to this but without the Ferrocene.

Liqui-Moly Diesel Smoke Stop is basically diesel fuel + ferrocene. Here is the MSDS.
Quote:
Hydrocarbons, C10-C13, n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, aromatics (2- 25%)
content % 80-<100
Ferrocene % 1-<5
Here is a paper that states the additive ferrocene decreases soot but increases NOx, CO2, and creates a ferric oxide coating.

Here is a very interesting paper that implies a significant decrease in carbon deposits.

Here is a paper that recommends against using metal based additives:

Quote:
MMT and Ferrocene are both associated with increased valve deposits.
Here is a general overview:
Quote:
Vehicle manufacturers have expressed concerns regarding catalyst plugging and oxygen sensor damage because of these additives, which could lead to higher in-use vehicle emissions especially at higher mileage. The impact seems greatest with vehicles meeting tight emissions standards and using high cell density catalyst substrates.
So from my brief research, it seems that publishing the MSDS by Liqui-Moly was a good thing. Unfortunately, the main additive ingredient, Ferrocene, is difficult to evaluate as it may damage oxygen sensors and clog catalytic converters. Who knows if it can damage our even more sensitive NOx sensors. Ferrocene does apparently decrease soot and carbon deposits.

Where does all this CBU go when this snake oil breaks it all down, just right out the tailpipe, and, if your getting CBU twice as fast as this snake oil is cleaning it what's the point... someone try it, would love to see it...

LM response to the 2001 ACEA paper would be interesting.

Not sure about the NOX and CO since EGR is trying to keep the combustion process cooler. I would guess the "increase " was not in an environment that used EGR. Who knows

I don't understand. It supposedly decreases the generation of soot, doesn't create more soot.

Where does the soot go when it gets broken down, right into your engine, and CBU is still accumulating while this stuff is not working...

No. It doesn't break down soot but supposedly causes less to be generated. There's a difference. I wasn't sure if you were generally confused or just trying to be funny.
