Muffler Delete
I'm looking under my car and very excited about the weight/sound advantage of removing my muffler, but I can't get around some concerns. My plan is to take it to my local exhaust experts, cut off the muffler at the entrance, and replace the path from cut-off point to exhaust tip with the same diameter exhaust tubing. I want to replace exhaust tips with 3.5" tips that don't attract attention, but I haven't started shopping yet without wondering about the following:
#1- Do the few sound clips out there (TDIWyse I believe? Others?) have otherwise stock emissions parts? I'm NOT thinking that the smokey/loud exhausts on youtube are just muffler deletes #2- Aside from the muffler itself, is anything effected on warranty by removing the muffler? On my 335i they didn't care at all that I had catless downpipes for a while, except that if it threw a code that caused complications and explanations that BMWNA would overtake their authority on. I had the BMS dp-fix installed at that time. #3- Is there truly an aerodynamic advantage to keeping the muffler? I don't have a drive way to get creative in, nor do I have metal-working capability whatsoever. I've seen what I believe to be TDIWyse under car baffler/splash guard type install... I don't know if I would be able to do something like that. One thing that might encourage interest on the topic is that I'm going to do the DIY as the exhaust experts do their work. I did it on the 335i forums years ago at the same place, and they liked the involvement and potential business it could bring. Thanks as always for helping me out guys. |

I believe TDI had his DPF gutted in those soundclips. I would vote for more clips under various driving conditions. Don't want rice loud or highway drone.

I will only smoke if you remove dpf and cat, the muffler is just for noise...

Oval tips are AMG ish.
I'm aware of the muffler's impact, I know it won't smoke or release turbo whistle. I'm interested in removing weight and possibly a little more grunt. If the muffler is hollow and does not have any sort of resonator or expansion chamber inside- not even packing- then removing it will do nothing. |

The pipes inside the chamber are basically straight through except for a perforated section near the cross pipe. And there's lots of heavy packing material.

I think the mufflers looks bad ass my car from behind, im very low to the ground but you can still see them a bit and it makes the car look finished in the back... I love the stock exhaust tips as well...

Everything on the M sport says bad ass, dual exhaust, M bumpers, it's a diesel, not a gas tuner...

Guys, to each his own. If someone wants to put smoke stacks coming out of his rear quarter panels (and I think this would be warped to do), let them do it. I agree with DRacer, I like the stock tips as well. I would like to chunk the mufflers but for entirely different reason.
This boy wants a spare tire stow cavity. I am determined to find a way. But first obstacle will be successful removal of urea tanks without codes popping up. |
