How fast really is your broadband?

Came across this useful network speed test website:

http://www.speedtest.net/

Is that 60 megabits/sec ?

How can this be possible?

I thought my 13 Meg connection was OK

I find that speedtest.net doesn't show the full speed of my connection. I have to saturate it with multiple downloads from here:

I have to confess that was taken at work Theoretically if I had the entire work network, it would have been around 1 Gigabit/sec.

At home, speedtest.net actually gets it about right (4Mb broadband):

Gordon, good idea, thought great, check different providers perhaps. But as I suspected it told me broadband is not yet available in my area etc.! Funny thing is I'm using a wireless broadband network this very minute. Thanks Karoo, who claim they do not have/control the monopoly around here.

Helen, the test is really only intended to give an estimate of the upload and download speed of your internet connection. When you get the message about not being available in your area, it basically means a testing server. I chose the Maidenhead server, although there is one available in Dublin (these are the pyramids on the map that you need to click on)

Anyway, since work should be a bit quieter now, I ran the test again (remotely from home)... and I'm now getting over 100Mbits/sec

Anyone need anything downloaded fast?

If you use the speedtest a few times it tracks your results. Mine show how variable it's response can be.

The 'faster than 98% of UK connections' bit is nice, but it's obviously nowhere near as fast as Gordons.

I get more consistent results when I saturate my connection with multiple downloads via a download manager.

Gibbo, I'm very happy with my re-map but what are your figures on your pc? Can't be worse than mine.

Doh, of course you are right ... I should have realised with the ping time

What broadband package do you have at home NFS - 13Meg seems pretty quick.

Well your original 60Meg was pretty amazing

I have "Be Broadband - Unlimited"

https://www.bethere.co.uk/

They offer 'up to' 24Meg via ADSL.

You pretty much have to live in the exchange to get that speed though. I'm about 1km from my exchange and my modem generally achieves a synch speed of 13Meg.

You just need to get in early so that you can 'hoover up the internet' before anyone else starts taking bandwidth
