grinding noises
Hello guys,
I am noticing grinding noises in my 2014 335i in the following cases: -making wide turns when moving from stop. -backing up and pulling out from parking i don't hear the same sounds when driving fast and making wide turns. Is this because of the brakes? is this normal? |

Grinding noises are clearly not normal, so I'd bring it to the dealer. Don't know if from brakes because we can't hear it, but usually grinding doesn't come from brakes.

i think its a combination of turning the wheels and lightly applying brakes. i will see if i can upload a recording.

I had something similar, only it wasn't "grinding", but more of a mild "chirping" or "squealing" noise. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the brake caliper brackets at no cost - problem solved. It apparently is a known issue.

There are possibly three things you have to look up to:
1) If you've continued ignoring the squealing brakes and they go silent, the next noise you'll hear from them is a powerful grinding. The last of the pad has ground away and the metal backing plate is now clamping directly onto the brake disc. Braking effectiveness is greatly reduced and the car is now dangerous. Not only that, but your repair bill is going up, too, since the discs will have to be replaced as well. 2) If you hear a grinding, clicking, or rumbling noise during a tight turn in the parking lot, it's likely a failing constant-velocity joint on a front-wheel-drive car. A CV joint allows the front wheels to both receive power and turn. 3) Other grinding noises could also be anything from a pebble lodged between the brake pad and the rotor to a failing alternator to bearings going dead or it might be steering wheel fluid. |

Its definitely not the brake pads. car recently passed inspection. everything came up green.
upon further testing, i can confirm that the grinding noise comes only when i pullout from a complete stop while doing a combination of a wide turn of the wheel and lightly applying brakes OR turning the steering while fully applying brakes at a stand still. So basically this means only when i back up from parked position. what does this mean? |

I had this problem on my e90. No one - dealers, indy shops - could figure it out. Drove me nuts. Ended up selling that car. Wish you luck, curious what it turns out to be in your case.
