ASS really didn't seem that bad to me.
Mind you my experience with it was from a short test drive in a 428i convertible, in city traffic with traffic lights and not stop signs.
You can let off the brake a tiny bit (not enough to start it moving) just as your traffic light is about to turn green and the engine will pop over and you'll be ready to go. Car didn't shudder or anything. Actually seemed almost slick to me. |

The ASS itself is really smooth for me.
The problem is that it cuts in way too quickly for me (8 speed auto) For instance, when I'm at a roundabout and I have to yield - I brake to a stop for a second and ASS kicks in. This for me is not desirable. I seemed to have more control over it in the manual loaner car that I got this week... I even enjoy it at stop lights now.

I use it every day and love it Not for everyone though.
I once did the brake letoff trick to force it to start when I wanted it to, but it's really not necessary in daily driving. By the time my foot touches the accelerator pedal it's ready to go... in fact the car starts creeping forward like normal as soon as my foot comes off the brake Sometimes it's smooth, sometimes it isn't.... also sometimes you can get a surprise when you're sitting at the lights with the engine off and all of a sudden it starts up by itself! |

I actually test drove a 4 gc and until I read this thread I didn't even know the car sut off! Lol
I test drove it stopping at least 10 times during the adventure. Wow it's pretty benign to the driver. But what happens if I quickly switch to the peddle? No movement...does the 3 series have this? I just ordered one. |

I use mine often, I like knowing I'm saving gas and it takes some of the frustration out of sitting at a long stop light. If I know a light is short or will be changing soon, I'll disable it for single intersections. With the 6MT it is nice to know it won't activate with the clutch in, which helps in situations like the roundabout described above.

Oh Im not sure, I just know that when Sport is on the ASS has a line through it on the display and it never engages when stopped.

The ASS on our cars is infinitely smoother than on Audi's. My folks have a 2013 Q5 and the ASS on that thing is horrendous. Sometimes at a stoplight, it might even cut the engine completely and then you have to manually fire up the car again with the push button! We'll definitely ask them to take a look at this at our next service since this is definitely not safe.

For me ASS is horrendous in city driving (my life flashes before my eyes in NYC at every stop light when I forget I have it on), but a great way to get additional MPG in suburban areas.

If the point of your thread is to counter the arguments made when the F3X came out that the ASS system was rough, just keep in mind that it has been improved from the earlier model years. I had a '14 loaner a couple months back and the ASS system was relatively smooth and unobtrusive, but my '12 is much rougher and jolts the entire car when it fires up. There's apparently a software update that smooths it out but either my early build is not eligible for it or my dealer is incompetent (very likely). So I just turned it off.

I've noticed this as well. Maybe it's because the restart is unexpected.. I'll usually disable it when I have A/C on, or turn off the A/C and roll the windows down if I want to use it, and that seems to never prompt a self-restart.

So ASS still defaults to ON in a 2015 4GC?

And this is why I stopped using ASS. For one, it's absolutely useless in warmer climates where AC is required to live - engine shutoff lasts all of about 15 seconds. But when the Engine does roar back to life and you're not expecting it, you panic for a second. "What the crap is going on? Oh right, engine."

Exactly my issue with ASS. Otherwise I think its not harsh at all. If only it were to wait a few more seconds before kicking in.

If these were the good 'ol days, you could just yank the particular fuse that controlled the ASS, instead of re-programming.
