Golf Tee Mod?

I know that the infamous "golf tee mod" has long been popular with BMW's that have vacuum operated exhaust flaps. Has anyone who owns an F8X found a way to wire the exhaust flap open so that it's at it's loudest setting all the time?

Has anyone who owns one really had a desire to?

Just curious.

You just have to unplug (leave it unplugged) wire to valve when exhaust flap is fully open.

At what point? Turn car on and unplug from trunk?

If true this could be a simple cool mod.

I thought if you had the engine dynamic mode set to sport plus the butterfly remained opened at all times

I thought the same. If you switch from efficient to sport or sport+ the idle exhaust is louder.

That's correct. Set engine response to Sport + and the valves stay open. Easy mod!!!

This is not true.
They still close in sport+ mode.

Here is quote from interview with bmw m3/m4 acoustic engineer, Rainer Drees.

"For instance, if you select the COMFORT mode, the exhaust valves are fully closed in the lower revs ranges. If there is a greater load demand at higher engine speeds, they open up. When driving with a constant load in COMFORT mode, the valves generally remain closed to achieve a maximum level of everyday comfort over long distances.

In SPORT and SPORT PLUS modes, other engine characteristics are selected for controlling the exhaust valves. At lower gears, the exhaust valves are always open, while when higher gears are selected under constant driving conditions, they are closed; however, if the load conditions change accordingly, they open up in a flash. There are also ranges in which we have chosen to close the valves, for instance at low engine speeds in high gears. In these ranges, which are frequently selected in the automatic mode of the M DKG Drivelogic for driving at maximum efficiency, the exhaust tract in turbo engines would have a tendency to drone if there were no damping."

"At lower gears they are open" I'm okay with that because at highway speeds who is really going to hear it.

If it's the same as the F30 it's right under the drivers side muffler.

This is great. Far better than open all the time. Just when you need it

Exactly. In lower gears it's open - good. While cruising its quieter- good. While cruising and you put your foot down it's louder- good. Can't see the issue at all.

Good for the DCT guys to just always dump it into Sport+. But as a 6MT guy, I want the option to be able to drive in Sport (still retain Rev Matching), while still having the flaps always open.
Would like more information or a (DIY) on where to disconnect when flap is open to keep it open.
Anyone successfully done this yet?

****EDIT**** JUST SAW THE DIY POP UP IN THAT SECTION OF THE FORUM. THANKS!!!!!

Thanks.

Anyway, it makes a big low RPM difference. I covered the plugs with a rubber glove and tied them off, and tucked them up under the heat shields.

Just unplugged mine. Most definitely makes a difference. You can have it in Eco mode and it still barks.
I didn't experience any drone and it eliminates the start up rattle.

unplug the connectors and if the valves are shut, grab a long screw driver and push them open. Or you can put it in sport plus and go unplug the connectors. Sounds good!

I have mine unplugged with the valves open and it has a lot more character but there is a drone when cruising on the freeway which can be annoying.

Has anyone tried unplugging just one...maybe that would be a happy medium. More bark, less drone?

I've done this and I'm wondering if anyone can help me find the extra plugs so I don't to just uses electrical tape to protect them from dirt getting into the connectors. I'd like to find the plugs from somewhere online so I can plug a blank male into the actual actuator and a female into the part that is unplugged. Does this make sense?
