235 Muffler Delete *Your Thoughts*

I'm in the middle of researching and pricing exhaust for my car. I notice that the axle backs are pretty expensive and performance is pretty much null. I spoke to a reputable BMW Tuner Shop and they recommended a DP, highflow cat, resonator and muffler delete.

What do you think? I admit I'm a noob to the bmw scene so if I got the config wrong just recommend what I should be looking at.

Thanks

Burger's 135i is making well over 600 on the stock axle back. The mufflers int the OEM systems seem to flow extremely well. You'd be best served with downpipes and a catless midpipe (I know the n55 midpipe for the e chassis cars is catless, I'm not sure about our F chassis's yet). Changing the axle back/doing a full cat back exhaust is more about a sound preference than for power gains.

Catless downpipes will throw codes without tuning, I'm surprised your research didn't lead you to this conclusion already. A high flow catted downpipe may or may not. If in fact the OEM mid pipe is catless, and you did a resonator delete that would not need tuning, or in any way throw a CEL.

Just tryin' to help a bro out.

too much to research I'm getting mod overload.

Plus the exhaust imo is a tad easier than the fn tunes. I just don't want to void warranty with a risky tune.

This helps... any specific brands?

Honestly I haven't looked into exhaust's at at all. My personal plan is/may be to do downpipes and then purchase a second OEM midpipe and weld in an electric exhaust cutout and turn down. A bit more complicated but you retain all the factory resonators/mufflers for when you want nice and quiet. Sort of a take on the c6 z06 mild to wild switches people do.

Nice I had a c6 Z06 I almost did that.

I may just do the delete just to get a little more sound for now until I decide on a full setup. I want to see if they will cut my diffuser and install quad tips.

Wouldn't you also risk voiding your warranty with an aftermarket exhaust?

Totally negates any warranty for the exhaust itself....if they can relate that to anything else that fails...we all know how that story goes.

can we assume that the warranty for the exhaust itself is obviously voided. I do not want this thread to turn into a warranty discussion

Did you see the thread on disconnecting the wiring after the exhaust is warm and both flaps are open? Seems like an easy first step.

Hacking the muffler off at Tito's Performance Muffler & Lube is typically one of the first few mods a 17 year-old does to their mom's car when it's handed down...right after Plasti Dipping the wheels black.

Do it. It will be sick!

Thumbs down

Not sure I understand your comment. I'm asking for thoughts. If you think it's a bad idea then say "i wouldn't do that"

Additionally this is not a dumpy muffler shop its a reputable tuner in my area.

In second thought keep your thoughts to yourself.

OP, are you looking for sound or performance? Doing muffler delete won't add much to your performance at all, just a little bit but not worth the money. If you're going for sound, yes it'll be a lot louder but it also drones a lot.

For me, I'm waiting for a reputable exhaust (iPE or akrapovic) and in the meantime, I have a ER downpipe with CG Precision's valve control. The control leaves the valve open which has a noticeable deeper and louder tone when accelerating between 1-3RPM. This has no performance gain, pure sound.

FWIW I got the muffler delete done today and I'll post some videos this weekend. I'm also 33, white, and don't give a flying f what anyone thinks.

admittedly, I think it's too loud but I'm coming from Lexuses that sounded like hybrids...stay tuned...

I wasn't even considering it and then I mentioned to the shop I was talking too about the JB4 how I feel the mufflers are a waste of money and he immediately said.... "We offer a muffler delete option for this car... it will make it louder and then we can concentrate spending the money on the dp and cat"

To me it made sense after learning the mufflers are just for noise as well. If I don't like it I"ll spend the 2k.

Can't wait to see your vids and thanks for letting me know my posts actually helped.

here's the first video. 228i m sport, muffler delete, everything else stock. magnaflow tips. warm start.

mind you the butterfly valve is removed too so the open/close within the first minute of start up is gone.

I tried filming from a bunch of different angles and distances.

my two cents:

it's entirely too loud for me. I am droning horribly at low rpms, goes away in midrange, and WOT is to me, embarrassing. worst of all, I feel like the car lost its pep.

I am totally self conscious driving around, feathering the throttle so as to avoid unnecessary attention. I could not drive with a passenger. honestly, I'm a little embarrassed driving right now...

I'm shocked honestly - like you, I had no interest in this or any mod whatsoever, but watched so many videos and read so many threads...people basically said you've got nothing to lose and won't break the bank.

I found a reputable shop recommended on the forum. guy couldn't have been nicer, was within the price ranges quoted all over this forum, but man...I'm getting it put back on tomorrow...I can't imagine what this thing sounds like with the resonator removed...

like anything else, YMMV. he simply put a Y pipe on and new tips. I kept my stock muffler / tips so only need to weld that end...

I so wanted to like this, but all I can think of is that it sounds like the pimped out civic this db in high school used to drive. it sounds like crap...
