TPMS

Already thinking about the winter and wondering if Canadian Cars are fitted with TPMS this time around or if they still use the stability and traction systems to detect a flat like the previous M3?
If we are fitted with TPMS, I guess we would need to get a second set for winter wheels to avoid errors being displayed all winter?

I'm not sure about Canadian vs US tires but i ordered a set of four for my new HRE's because I didn't want to take them off my stock wheels. There were roughly $300/four.

No true TPMS, just traction control systems that measure rotational differences.

TPMS not required in Canada. Its a US only requirement. Canada and rest of the world from what I understand is done via sensors on the breaking system where it monitors the rotational rate of the tire. Some Japanese autos sold in Canada do need TPMS, since they are manufactured to meet US requirements, but in your case you don't have to worry about it.

Correct. US has TPMS starting with the E9X chassis (pressure sensors and receiver), while the rest of the world uses RDC (data from from speed sensor).

F8X likely followed suit since the F3X uses TPMS.

Speaking of winters. What are our options for 19" or 18"?

How did you get TPMS? I didn't see that option when I ordered mine.

Dealer told me the car uses the ABS rotational sensor and that the car didn't have TPMS.

Guys, I switched rims on my car but used stock tires. After unmounting the wheels, there are actually TPMS sensors back there. So I guess the question is 1) do we have a receiver on the car (my guess is yes, cause they are too lazy to create a different production stream just for a small radio receiver) and 2) how do we code the car to activate it!

Stanley, you want to give it a shot?

Yes, it can be coded, when I was coding my car, you have to activate the sensors to display in the iDrive and and activate the sensors as well. Very easy.

Good to know! Did you get it working?

Would you consider posting DIY instructions? Having a TPMS would be great.

This makes no sense to me. Why would BMW disable a useful safety system just because a stupider system meets minimal regs? It's not as though a FTMS doesn't alert the driver about a flat.

I didn't get the sensors (my stems are rubber) for the wheels for some reason, so I didn't brother coding it, but I am looking into buying them in the future.

I will when I get to it, or someone wants me to try it on theirs.

I am glad they use the "stupider" system as you not need to have the sensors in every set of wheels than you use.I had 3 sets of track wheels at one point for my E92's and that would be a pain to have sensors in all those wheels.

I agree that it would add costs, but wouldn't the real time readout of tire pressures in each tire be of value?

How do we find out if Canadian cars have the proper receiver?

That is why I have an expensive tire gauge

Interesting... so some cars have it and some don't... I was at Simply Tire. They said I had TPMS as soon as they saw my car, since the valve stems were metal as opposed to rubber. I was denying it until they popped the wheel off and saw it. Farley doesn't have it and has rubber stems. Perhaps that's how you can tell easily?

Yes you have it, but why didn't BMW activate it?

Which from what I can tell is easy to do.

I wonder if you got a US based car? Or, maybe, the production delays on wheels (reportedly anyway) meant that BMW just threw a set on your car with the US valve stems and TPMS in it even if it isn't activated in your car?

I have seen 6 Canadian M3/4 and all had the rubber valve stems and no TPMS as far as I recall... or let me restate, I didn't notice a metal valve stem and I inspect the cars closely enough that I would have caught that IMO. It isn't supposed to be in a Canadian car. This is weird!
