Hypermiling 428i

Has anyone ever tried hypermiling an N20 equipped BMW?

I just tried it today on my 53 min commute back home.
No highway as you can see that my average speed was 36.3 mph.

I got it as high as 39 mpg at one point but it settled at 37.9 mpg by the time I arrived home.
My car is 428i with 6 speed manual.

Yes
If I try to "hyper mile" my F31 N20 8AT on my 15 mile back road commute (avg speed 30 mph) in EcoPro I can get close to 40mpg on that trip. This trip does include about 8 stops (traffic lights or turns)

Same on my 25 mile highway drive when I go to a different location for work, avg speed 65 mph, in EcoPro trying to drive for MPG's I can get 37mpg on that trip.

These cars get good gas mileage, granted I don't have an N20 equipped vehicle. From my experience I drove up the 5 from LA to SF, it's about a 460 mile trip. I stopped a few times and by no means I was hypermiling. I think I got about 36-38MPG which is pretty impressive on a car with a 3.0 Turbo.

That IS very impressive for a 335. I think EcoPro does hypermiling for you, especially on freeways. The best I got was 39 on my 328i in EcoPro during a road trip.

I managed 52,3 MPG (4,5 L/100km) in my 420i on a 37 mile trip to nearest town and back. I was really impressed getting lower than the 4,8 L/100km declared for extra-urban driving.

That's impressive. I was loaned a 320i for the weekend since my 335 was in the shop. I wasn't hypermiling the car and I think I got something around the line of 39 MPG average for both city and highway. N20 are something else....for efficiency at least.

Yeah, your 'challenge' usually puts you in the fast lane doing 55 MPH and creating dangerous conditions in the other lanes. All so, what, you can save $0.50 cents and prove to yourself that you can, wait for it, drive really slowly and recklessly as a result.

You want to hypermile? Cool. Ride a bike.

On my way down to the coast, I averaged close to 39 mpg without even trying. I was even in comfort for most of the time and kept it under 70mph due to the high number of highway patrol officers along the way. I had the wind working with me as well. 328i with 8AT

It's awesome the gas milages that these cars are getting. It still blows my mind away seeing it in action.

I tried to keep my foot out of it this AM on my quick drive to the gym. 33mpg on surface roads ain't bad. But my average overall is still 22.7 Was in comfort, no start/stop. AC on. Metallica blaring.

What a pants-on-head-retarded way to respond. You realize there's 8 gears in these right? sub 85mph keeps you good mileage range. So there's your first incorrect assumption. Your second is that everyone posting in here posts up in the slow lane. I learned to drive on the NJTP/rt287/80, where you got run over and/or shot for going less than 90 in the fast lane, so wind your neck in and stow the assumptions.

I love the 'we're too rich to worry about practical things' comments as they related to nicer cars. How do you think some here have the funds to afford nice things? It ain't by squandering money, I can tell you that.

Also, do you really think the OP spent $4-500 on a radar detector so that he can stay in the 'fast lane at 55mph creating dangerous conditions'? Riiiiiight...

Good observation about my V1 detector!!!

I normally drive in sport+ mode full time and get about 27 mpg on the same commute.

As someone mentioned earlier, it was a challenge. Just got bored one afternoon and tried hypermiling for fun for one day.

I tried it once on a road trip from DC to NYC for work. I lasted about 2 hours. The most challenging part of hypermiling for me was:

1. Not getting killed getting in the left lane to pass someone going under the speed limit.

2. Not wanting to drive my car off a bridge due to the fact that in eco mode, the car's habit of leaving it in the highest gear possible made it almost impossible to accelerate faster than a Prius.

3. Not wanting to drive my car into a tree whenever it'd yell at me for going over 80 mph (yes I know you can turn this feature off).

It's a challenge in patience for me and not really worth it. Coming from an Infiniti, the F30 gets plenty good mileage for me regardless of how I drive it.

i just had my first oil change (6400 miles) and was reading over 25 mpg average since new. the computer reset unfortunately, but I'll see if it gets better since the car is barely broken in. this seems great considering the mix of driving I do and the occasional sprint to the redline.

on the highway, cruising at 80, I can get 36mpg pretty consistently. I am constantly amazed at the actual mileage I can get from a car this fun to drive. The ford fiesta rental car I have today got only 33 at 80mph over a 100 mile drive.

As has been stated already, it doesn't require grandma driving style. I'll "hypermile" by building speed up to 85 mph going downhill and slowing to 70 or maybe 68 going uphill through the mountainous highways I travel, which are a 65 mph speed limit zone.

It's less about going slow and more about smart choices in terms of not rushing up into people's bumpers only to go right onto the brake pedal. The key is maintaining momentum and anticipating situations as far as your eye can see.

I can afford lots of things, but that doesn't make it right to waste the money.

and yet another asinine response....you must be one of those "special" people my mother told me about.

1) no one said anything about driving in the left lane
2) no one said anything about money. ive got a Jag with a thirsty V8...clearly im not worried about .50............theres other challenges people like to participate in...like...hmmm...i dunno....seeing how many MPG's they can possibly get....or how far they can take their tank of gas.

in a safely manner of course....i had to make sure i stated that or else you'd automatically assume i was doing it with the intention of killing people.

So that's what I'm doing wrong! I suppose I need to stop for pedestrians instead of running them over. I lose a bit of momentum (especially if I hit a fatty) but I'd rather not come to a complete stop, it really kills mileage!

By no means do I try to hypermile, but there was a time when I was going away for a wedding (~5 hours drive @ 130-140kph), and I got ~32mpg/7.3L/100km (on both the tank there and bank, manually calculated). I currently average ~25mpg/9.5L/100km on my everyday driving (again this is manually calculated).

I'd say these numbers are pretty damn good for a car with 300hp and awd. My previous car, which was a 2.5 Mazda3, was averaging 23.5mpg/10L/100km and it only had 170hp lol.
