Anyone running a Pyrometer on their 335d?

I know there are various tools out there to monitor EGTs for our cars but is anyone running a dedicated pyrometer. Any particular models better than others?

Here's an example:

Why not just use torque app? Or something similar? Then you do not need to add an extra bung to exhaust, extra wiring...
It's quick, easy, user friendly, and it gives you A LOT more info than just egt's
Not worth the hassle IMO

Extra bung in the exhaust is no problem.. Super easy to do while building a downpipe

Torque/BMWhat/Bavarian Technic etc can only see the post turbo EGT probe data. If you're going to the trouble to add another EGT probe it would likely be a good thing to put it in pre-turbo to see some data you can't get with the existing EGT probes.

I agree about the pre-turbo TDI. Any risk there due to it being extremely hot? I suppose that's why most tap into the post turbo part of the exhaust manifold.

It's definitely going to get hotter there when running the engine hard, which is why most people I know who modify their vehicles monitor temps there. That's where I put my EGT probes on my other diesel engines.

I haven't messed with adding a pre-turbo probe to the bmw yet as it has 3 factory OEM EGT probes in its exhaust already and I'm comfortable with the post turbo temps I'm seeing for the mods I'm running.

TDI, was curious what temps you suggest to shoot for when tuning. Or at what temp the dde starts taking fuel away from your experience....

It was right around 1200F on the post turbo probes. Using the "rule of thumb" of pre turbo temps being ~250-300F higher would put pre turbo EGT's at 1450-1500F before it starts shutting down fuel. Unfortunately I don't know if the "rule of thumb" holds for our cars... which is part of the reason I'm trying to keep EGT's post turbo on a 1/4 mile pull below the 1200 defueling point. For a short dyno pull or a 0-60mph or even 0-100mph the temps are much lower than on the 1/4 mile from my experience.

I've seen quite a few ones out there. I know a couple of truck guys who love these, citing good long term use with no issues. Don't see why we couldn't run them in our cars:

Really interested in seeing our pre-turbo numbers and how they compare to the post-turbo numbers.
