Bummer.

2nd gear is a pain in the ass. It just doesn't want to go in sometimes during downshifting hard above 50 MPH. Never grinds, though.

I think that is the same for most of the cars out there.

Every 6mt i have owned was like that. 3rd to 2nd was hard and 2nd to 1st is almost impossible ( you never really need to anyways)

i find Rev match to 2nd makes it easier though.

Sorry to hear that... I was just thinking how smooth the F32 gearbox is compared to the E92... Still, 2nd gear engagement could be smoother.

I had a weird issue with mine where it was grinding and popping out of gear when I would let the clutch out after shifting into 2nd. It would go into gear fine but the second I would let the clutch out it would pop out. Went away on its own and hasn't happened again.

At least they replaced it though. That's one of the things that makes me paranoid about owning an expensive car with a stick - the looming possibility that if there's any kind of a failure they might try to blame it on driver error, even if it's a legit defect.

Did you see how many other problems there were. They had to change sensors some kind of computer if I am reading it right.

I just came from a 2005 TL that was notorious for having a 3rd gear that would just pop out. My car was out of commission for nearly 5 weeks while they replaced the transmission (under warranty of course). Not reassuring hearing something similar might happen to my F30 as well. Ugh.

Yes sir they replaced the MT pretty fast they had the car about 10 days. Just very disappointed paying $50,000 for a car that had that many problems in so little time.

"That many problems?" I only see the tranny, DME, a heater, and the two (miniscule) recalls. All of your issues were resolved (i.e. no "unable to duplicate" or "functions as designed"). Everything else is free maintenance, plus they provided a loaner (not all dealers do that).

Per the RO you've had the car since October of '12 and it has 34k miles on it. If these are the only problems you've had in that timeframe, you're better off than a lot of people on these forums.

I agree with the poster above, it really isn't that bad. Plus, you can't say "I paid $50,000 to expect no problems." It's a vehicle, regardless of the price. Porsches, Mercedes, Audis, Range Rovers, etc, they call can have problems, doesn't matter how much these people pay.

Example: We bought brand new 2009 Audi A6 3.0T. Had LED DRL go out three times, Water Pump Burst resulting in Engine Overheat, TPMS malfunction twice, ECU Malfunction once, and the grand finale of the battery draining completely every 3 days. Was only 10 months old with 13,000 miles. We paid $62,000, and nobody expected these problems but it doesn't mean these things can't happen. Audi ended up giving us a brand new 2010 Audi A6 with a higher Sport Package and this car was perfect for 65,000 miles.

There is bound to be a bad seed here and there with mass produced vehicles. 10 days out of service is not bad. Sorry to hear you had troubles with it in the first place, but be lucky it wasn't something more severe like others have had. You know you truly have a bad car if it's in for service more than you can drive in.

Theres your problem Audi's are garbage, thank god this happened under 50,000 miles that would have been a 8,000 dollar repair bill. Just saying the 6 speed tranny is a weak link in the f30 335.

I think about that whenever I wonder about getting a used, out of warranty car regardless of price

Glad it got fixed OP

I had the exact problem on a 2013 335 xdrive. From day one I would get the occasional grind when shifting into second gear. Lately it was doing it every single time. Brought car in on Wednesday, instantly diagnosed 2nd gear synchros, replaced gearbox and got my car back on Thursday. I almost fell out of my chair when they called me the next day to pick it up. Lucky for me there was 1 6MT transmission in stiock at the depot in Toronto.

So they apparently changed the 6-speed manual from the one used in the E9x series? I say this because I had a 2007 E92 335i tuned to over 400HP (flywheel) and drove it over 40,000 miles with ZERO transmission problems; I didn't baby it, but I also made it a point to rev-match when downshifting. Did a good bit of speed-shifting, especially the 1-2 shift, never once heard a grind.

I bought my '07 E92 as a CPO in early 2008, with an in-service date of Sept. 2006. At around 36K miles, I was out of the warranty period which on a CPO runs from in-service date, not purchase date. I had the differential and transmission drained and re-filled with Red Line fluids - one specifically designed for each component. Red Line MTL in the gearbox seemed to make the trans shift a little smoother effort-wise, but again, no grinding. The "lifetime fill" for trans and diff have long been dismissed as inadequate, according to knowledgeable BMW technicians such as Mike Self in Roundel magazine. If your trans is under warranty, I'd most definitely get BMW to fix it, but I'd seriously consider refilling the trans after that many miles.

I took mine in last week for 2nd gear issues (Friday) they called me Monday this week to let me know a new transmission was on the way.

Car has 60k miles, so glad I got the extended warranty...

Lol. By that logic, BMW's are garbage too since yours (along with some of the other forum members) have 'so many problems'?

No, the F30 uses the same G6-45 that the LCI E9x used.

Note however, that the early E9x used a G6-53...
