Who traded their E90/E92 for F80/F82?

For those who have traded in their E9x for an F98x I would like to hear your impressions comparing the two...What do you like better / not as much? Is the F8x as much fun?

Best,

Justin

I owned 2 E90 M3s and drove tens of thousands of miles in them on all road types and frequently on the autobahn . I be writing a full comparison review this week but to answer your question : The only thing that i can think of right now that I preferred on the E90 was the downshift noise with DCT and the higher redline- everything else I prefer the F80........and believe it or not I include the sound in that statement. It is as much fun to drive as the E90 was.

I think the downshift noise is lost due to turbos. My M5 is missing it also.

I was worried that I would miss my E92 M3 after trading it in on the F82.

Nope, the F82 is better in every way. Progress is wonderful.

I had 2 E92 M3s.

As others have suggested, the only thing that I miss is the sound on a downshift blip. Everything else is improved. The chassis, power, handling, braking... all improved. I loved my E92s. I love my F82 even more

A few nit picks on the F8X like buzzing seat lights, fuel ecomony, a few rattles and artificial exhaust sound but other than nit picking it's an upgrade for sure. Steering, interior, brakes, suspension, power all improved. The E9X really needs a supercharger and coilovers to compete IMO.

I'm getting 16 mpg with a decent amount of freeway driving. I expected it to be a little better.

That's about what I usually get with my E92. How many miles can you go on a tank?

That's what happen with turbos, as soon as they spool the economy goes out the window! At least it's for a good reason!

I'm averaging 18 mpg US post break in service driving in a very 'spirited' fashion including high speed on the autobahn- this includes many short journeys in stop start traffic as well. My car sees 100mph+ Most days.

On my way back to Germany after picking the car up I got 26 mpg US on a 500 mile trip sitting mostly at around 90 mph. I got roughly 350 miles from the tank- I used to get only 250 with my E90- less than 200 if I drove it hard. I reckon with everything in comfort on a long trip driving at 70 mph and being cautious with acceleration and braking, 400 miles + on a tank is possible in this car.

I have really noticed the fuel improvement and less frequent fill ups.

I'm getting better or similar mpg to my old E90 335i.

My driving has been very average around town and highway on this current tank and im at 16.8 mpg. The previous tank I was pushing the car hard most of it and was at 15.2 mpg, well see if it improves. I will need to run it empty to see how many total miles im getting on a full tank.

With a combo of spirited and relaxed driving, I'm getting 25.5mpg over the last 3000 miles in my new M4. My older 2008 M3 got 17mpg usually and no better than 20mpg with baby-driving on the freeway. Overall, the fuel economy rivals my 2010 135i.

I just came back from the dealer to trade my E92 M3. I won't pick up my M4 until next Monday at the Welt. The dealer did throw me the keys of one the M4s they had on the lot to take for a spin. The drive was too short for me to really assess the car, so I will wait for my ED before I comment.

While a short test drive is not nearly enough to assess the car, what is your initial impression if I may ask?

The more I drive this car the better it gets. To sum it up I'd say the driving experience is not too dissimilar to the E9x M3 but with much more pace, noise , grip and all wrapped up in a better body and interior.

Thanks ss134, sounds good. I'm extra curious though to hear CanAutM3's initial impressions. His comments over the last year here has been balanced and sensible IMO with a view on cars that I find reasonably close to mine in many aspects.

Essentially no surprises, pretty much what I expected.

There is no denying it, it has lag. I did several tests in different gears at different RPM. Drove at constant speed with a steady throttle and then punched it. There is an initial weak acceleration and after a little moment you get the full power pull. There was too much traffic to take clover leaf onramps anywhere close to speeds where I could throttle steer, so I don't know yet if this lag will be an issue from that perspective. However, it does have much less lag than an M235i that I test drove recently.

The steering felt rather numb. I did not drive much at high speed though (120km/h max). That being said, I was not enamoured with my E92 steering before I dialled in much more front camber (with the addition of camber plates). It really made the steering come alive. Hopefully playing with the alignment will improve the steering on the F8X too.

The M4 does sound very good. It has a nice inline 6 signature growl. I couldn't really notice active sound. Sound was good with windows up and down. I still prefer the sound of my old M3, but I must say, I did not find the sound of the S65 that great in stock form. It is only after I installed an MPE, a K&N filter and a BMPSport tune that the sound became pure bliss . The F8X will likely benefit in that respect too.

Man, does this car rip. It pulls like a demon. DSC and MDM are pretty useless for any performance driving as they both reign the car in way too much. It is only with DSC off that you can really appreciate the pull of this powertrain. Wheel spin at will in first and second and a solid chirp in third (did not go any faster). The car is extremely easy to control and keep the rear in the rear while doing fishtailing frenzies. I could not really assess the handling due to traffic conditions, but the car feels very well planted.

The car I test drove had the fixed dampers. They felt very good and well balanced. But way too harsh for our horrible Montreal roads. Sure glad I opted for EDC (only $900 in Canada).

It also had the HUD. I was disappointed that I could not order it as a stand alone option and I was not willing to dish out $4500 for options I DID NOT want in the premium package just for the HUD. That being said, I did not really like the hud. In M mode, I found the tach difficult to read and found the HUD rather distracting. Further, it became almost invisible with my polarized sunglasses. I did not even notice the HUD until I took off my glasses. I guess to each their own, but for me, I am no longer disappointed I don't have the HUD.

It was only a short 30 minute test drive (with plenty of traffic). In such a short drive, it is difficult for me to become one with the car, so the negatives pop out more. I can't wait to spent some good quality time behind the wheel of my new baby to discover and appreciate all of its subtleties.

4 days to go until ED

Thank you CanAutM3, sounds like pretty much what I've been preparing myself for as well. The steering on my E90 came alive when I put PSS on it with some fine tuning of alignment. Lag and steering are the main negatives I expect and loss in high rpm drama. Good to hear there were no unexpected negatives. I have HUD on my order but don't expect to like it, I find it distracting as well but I've not spent enough time with it to see if it can turn around and become a positive. At least it can be turned off I'll be picking up mine a few days after you. Have a good trip!
