Should I proactively purchase additional lease miles?

Leased a '13 328i in November 2012. 39 month lease with 12k miles per year, so I have to turn it in with right around 39,000 on the clock in February 2016.

I just did some quick math and it looks like I'll end up 500-1000 miles over, assuming my driving habits don't change for the second half of my lease.

Would I be wise to think about purchasing additional miles on or around month 36 at the discounted rate, or roll the dice that I'll be able to negotiate any overage when I turn in the car? Other option I anticipate is that BMW will attempt to pull my lease ahead as I get closer to the termination date. In that scenario I might be +/- a couple hundred miles from the target.

if you jump into another BMW lease...you may be able to get them to waive the additional miles. ive done it with Jaguar.

worst case, if you're up 1000 miles....just buy some more at month 35 and call it a day. its .16 if you pre-buy.

I wouldn't. I had ~3k miles waived when my 2011 328 got pulled ahead to get into an F30 335

If you are getting another BMW chances are you can get it comped, in my opinion

1,000 miles over is like $200 out of pocket - should be able to waive if buying another BMW

You now have until the day before turn-in to buy miles at sixteen cents.

Not true. Inside of your last 4 months, it's .20 a mile.

That said, for $1000 miles, we're talking about a difference of 40 bucks. I say who cares.....

"Buy More Lease Miles

What does it mean to buy more Lease miles?
More miles = more driving fun. So, you think that you might go over the number of miles in your lease contract? BMW Financial Services allows you to buy additional miles today, for up to a 20% savings, and enjoy more driving fun now without paying more later.

Why should I buy more miles?
Enjoy more miles of exhilarating driving behind the wheel of your BMW. Why worry about having to pay at the end of your lease for going over your allotted miles? Use the mileage calculator to estimate the number of additional miles you want to enjoy in your BMW and see how much you will save by purchasing them now.

What are the benefits?
Cost Savings - Save up to 20 percent on additional lease miles by purchasing them ahead of time
Flexibility - Additional miles can be purchased in one lump sum payment, or the total cost may be spread out over the remaining monthly payments.
It's Easy! Everything you need to complete this process is available right here on the My BMW website.

Don't delay! This service is available to you until you reach 4 months from the end of your lease. So purchase your additional miles today!"

Incorrect. BMWNA changed the rule sometime ago. That's why I used the word "now" in my post.

I stand corrected. Seems the website is inconsistent, or the change was made after my lease started and doesn't apply to me, not sure which. I took that directly from the bmwusa website, from my account where I would buy the extra miles, still said before last 4 months. I checked my more recent lease, just started in December, so seems more likely they just haven't updated that part of the website, unless this is a brand new change.

But then I found this is from the general BMWFS page. Still seems silly to me (why not just lower the rate if you can do it the day before you turn in but not day of...) but good for us just the same:

The Mileage Adjustment Program

When you're behind the wheel of your BMW, it's easy to lose track of the miles.

But there's no need to cut the experience short, even if you've already exceeded your mileage limit. The BMW Financial Services Mileage Adjustment Program helps you avoid end-of-term excess-mileage charges, so you can just keep enjoying the drive.

How it works. If your account is current and you're in good financial standing,1 you can purchase additional miles at a discounted rate. You can do so at any point up until one day prior to your scheduled lease maturity date or the day you're turning in your vehicle, if you're planning to do so before the maturity date arrives.
