Killed a mustang 5.0. Our cars really that fast?
Rolling start from 20mph I had a car on him until about 90-110 he started inching up but couldn't catch me. My question is how did I beat him by that much when he has 120 horses on me? I knew the car was fast but damn! Was this bad driving on his part or is our 335 really a mustang killer?

Also, the Mustang has 6 speeds. We have the brilliant 8AT by ZF. |

Good kill!! Simple answer to your question, in my opinion, is yes.
I've pulled a car or so on Mustangs and the like in 1.8T-2.0T tuned VAG cars (in gears 1-3). Almost half the HP, but could compete under 70mph or so thanks to the turbo and very broad power band that delivers controllable power. The N55 is just about perfect IMO in terms of displacement and power delivery. It may be at a 150hp deficit in this example, but it produces torque way lower in the power band than Ford's v8 and the average driver will be able to launch it better. Higher speed rolls would favor the Mustang though I would think, there's no replacement for displacement at 70-80mph and above. I'd rather have a 350hp car that can put the power to the road than a 550hp car that is a mixture of short power band and unusable low gears. As an aside, this is IMO why the 540-600hp GTR feels so astonishingly fast. Turbos provide a very broad power band and the tranny + suspension are an awesome marriage, resulting in wicked power delivery to the wheels. It may be 550hp on paper, but it feels like a 700hp car IMO.

I got the jump on a new Boss 302 from a red light to 60 and was a car length in front, at the next light he asked what mods/tunes I had because he was surprised! Told him I was 100% stock - he did not look like a happy owner.
P.s. Speed limit on this road is 50 and we were the only souls as it's a two lanes across a bridge. And yes, I am aware that there is no street racing on forum - ty Last edited by Gastoys; 07-02-2014 at 09:23 PM.. |

Not a surprise, more hp doesn't really mean faster all the time, there's more factors that come into play, low end/high end torque, transmission, traction, etc. In this case more hp and not enough traction plus an outdated transsmition worked against the mustang.
Of course the driver plays a huge role but in this case you had the upper hand, after 65-70mph that's a different story. |

From a dig maybe because of trying to get the Mustang to hook up, from a roll no contest between two comparable drivers. Even from a stop the Mustang will catch up quickly. The numbers are what they are, the 5.0 is much faster than our cars. Look at comparable quarter mile trap Speeds, not even close.

Your 300HP is advertised horsepower not WHP; its not even brake horsepower just a made up number. You have about 280whp max on a Dynojet with a base 335i. A Coyote Mustang will kick a 335i's butt, even up, every time. Against older Mustangs the pendulum will swing back toward the 335i

A lot depends on the specific configuration of the car. With MPPK, 8 AT, staggered performance tires and xDrive you gain at least a second 0-60 on a base car with a 6 speed. My car is very nearly as quick as my E92 M3 DCT coupe was out of the hole. Or rather substantially quicker to about 30 mph and slower from then on. And the amazing thing is it takes no skill: just put it in Sport +, pull the lever to the left and floor it. With the M3 I really needed to pay attention when I broke traction.
And with the newer MPPK we are getting something just over 300 wheel horsepower. |

2 cyl, 2 ltr, 100hp deficit. The ZF 8 is major contributor to your pony slayer.

The problem here is he wasn't racing. I love my 335, but the numbers do not lie, the 5.0 is faster. And the G37 is faster than the 328i, sorry but there is no way you "Killed" it. It might be close, but killed it means you were the only one racing. Look up the numbers the G37 splits the numbers between the 328i and 335i.

Beat it by two car lengths numerous times. It's my friends car. We switched cars and he beat me driving my car. Not scientific but the 328i is clearly quicker. And the 2.0 liter is a lot more refined then his six cyl.

Topics like this weed out the accountants of our group real quick it's more than what's on paper fellas. Driver, tires, suspension, passenger load, gas tank (F or E), etc. all can play a factor. Factors that you can't possibly be privy to, unless you were there. I've seen tiny turbo/4cyl cars with half the HP of some of the V8s get the jump by 2-3 cars from a dig and hold a lead through highway speeds. It's quickness vs power, and in my book quickness wins for all situations you would encounter on the street. |
