335i F30 MSport, how often do problems occur?

So I ordered my 2015 F30 335i Msport, and I have been on this forum ever since. I read bunch of threads on "limp mode" and other problems specficially with M sport. I am scared that I made a bad choice of purchasing this car. Having second thoughts on maybe I should have went for different car... Does it occur frequently?

I am coming from Honda world where problems are rare, and my car had no problem ever past 10 year other than typical wear of parts.

IMO M sport is worth it just on looks alone, plus the better seats and steering wheel. As I understand it, the beefed up cooling system associated with the M Sport models is what is causing limp. I wouldn't worry too much about it, this can probably be alleviated by a sensor swap or ECU reflash at the dealer.

A pain, no doubt. But from where I sit, the M Sport is worth the minor headache. I've said it before, never would've considered an F30 3 series, until I saw the M Sport.

Ordered my F30 M-Sport 335i back in January, received it on March 7th (BMW's birthday oddly enough).

Put about 5000 miles on it since then, absolutely 0 problems. I did have a check engine light come on after a couple hundred miles, but that was because I didn't close the gas cap properly. Tightened it and the light went off, don't really consider that a problem since that's user error and a loose gas cap will cause the check engine light to go off in any relatively modern car.

I wouldn't worry about it, on every forum you go to you're going to hear a lot about problems. I had an Infiniti before and put 80k miles on it over 7 years and had absolutely 0 problems (also purchased brand new), meanwhile many others on the forum complained frequently about issues relating to severe oil consumption and oil leaks and interior rattles.

Your F30 will be worlds better than your dull Honda, trust me. If you're still paranoid, you can cancel your order at any time, get your deposit back and get something else. Like a Camry or something.

I've had my fan replaced after limp mode. I also had a "top view camera malfunction" warning, however I did not mention it to the dealer because it works perfectly fine. That's about it, but since you're getting a 2015 model, everything should work out. The car is really worth it. It's stunning on the road, especially in EBII

Totally agree. I hate the new 3 series look because of the weird bumpers. But M-Sport saved the day. I would possibly be driving an Audi if not for M-Sport.

But I'm just curious about how the additional cooling is causing this limp mode. Is there any additional info on this topic of M-Sport = limp mode, so I can be prepared just in case?

So if I get cooling systems or whatever is causing the limp mode fixed, it should not occur again? I hear cases where people basically go to dealer regularly due to problems... I know my brother's 335i (E90) couple years ago had so many problems.

I know that this forum is filled with people who post about problems, and I never hear about "regular" 335i that is totally fine. It just gets me nervous. This is my legit "first" car (not supported by parents) so I am worried. I feel little secured now

The f30 has so far been a fairly reliable car, but again the amount of cabin technology and drive train sophistication make some small problems inevitable. This ain't no Honda.

I'm on my second f30 335i M Sport and have had a handful of limp modes on each. Limp modes as in reduced power, not power failure. None of which required visits to the dealership or any sort of "fixes".

I wouldn't worry about it too much if I were you, just enjoy the car.
Most of the limp mode situations happened to 2013 models from what I've read in the forum, the 2015 should be a more refined version but as mentioned before, with new technology come new problems, it's part of the process.

FWIW I remember years ago driving my brothers E39 M5 and by the time we finished a spirited drive the check engine light came on and the engine had cut power in "Limp Mode".

I've had 1 limp mode since owning my '13 Msport and I have over 30k on the clock. It went away as soon as I turned the car off and turned it back on again. In the grand scheme given that it's trying to protect against something it thinks may be dangerous, I've got not other complaints.

Almost nobody gets on a forum just to post, "My car is fine, no problems today." Same reason you never turn on the news and hear, "The bank on the corner of 3rd was not robbed today and nothing eventful happened."

There's always a small risk of problems with any car. BMW is a bit above average in terms of quality and reliability so odds are you'll be fine. If you want the best odds, then get a Lexus as they seem to be an outlier in terms of quality. Most everybody else in the above average group is pretty close.

BTW, my car is fine, no problems today

I have the older 2007 E92 335i and my brother in law has a 2007 E90 335i. Neither cars had any major problems over a period of 7 years. Chillax and enjoy and don't let the forum drag you down. People don't post positive things and how reliable their cars are on a daily basis, so you only read the negative posts.

I could have said the exact same thing. I was waiting for delivery of my 2014 335 MSport and came on here. My first reaction was, "Holy crap I just bought a POS car". My first 3-series several years ago had no issues. But as they are saying, mostly what you get on forums are people coming in to ask about problems or complain. And it's a good place to do that because there are really knowledgeable people on here. A lot of the problems you read about are spread over 2 or 3 model years and some don't appear in current MY. Example, the dashboard vibration. That is a long thread which still gets refreshed. I saw pictures of people zip tying dumbbell weights under the hood and thought "OMG". My car was delivered with the fix already in place.

Limp mode has me worried a bit. I have not experienced it with ~2500 miles so far. But since it seems a bit well known at this point, it'll get fixed. The only probs I've had are various rattles and buzzes in the doors as a result of what's playing on the audio system. Not a big deal and I'll get that fixed. But I still get excited every time I get in the car and fire up the engine....and that's including driving TO work.

My car is fine, no problem ... Wait.

Finally, my car is fine, but in need of new rear tires

Jokes aside, I had a 2007 335i (1st year of production).
Had my fare share of HPFP issues, some limp modes, but still was the car I liked the most, until my 2012 335i (1st year of production for the F30).
Enjoying this one also, and as you can see, should be prone to problems since I get the 1st year cars !

So in a twist of irony I had my first actual issue today!

Driving home from work and sitting in traffic as always I get an error message that reads "Chassis: Drive Moderately, Consult Service Center" then the car started riding a little rough.

Goes into BMW tomorrow bright and early for service. Gonna drop it off, take a loaner, and come back after work. Hopefully it's nothing major. At least the car is still drivable.

Back on topic.

I'm on my second one too, and after the second one had like 3 or 4 limp modes in 2 days last April I took it in. DME flash and fan replaced. So far so good.
