4 Series Sport Line Limp Mode [UPDATE]

I've got a 2/14 built 435i xDrive Sport Line and I've gotten Limp Mode twice in 700 miles. Same story as the F30 335i limp modes: No error codes or display, reduced power, cooling fan on max, running cold-ish, rough downshifting in manual, no revs over 3,000rpm in auto mode.

I've had the electric fan replaced and it happened again 40-50 miles later. Now its back at the dealer and BMWNA is involved. Apparently they are going to replace all 4 possible causes: the auxilary fan, thermostat, fan relay, DME and software update.

This is absurd.

Anybody other F32 owners get this yet?

This is fortunate. More people testing that configuration! The more issues they see, the more likely they will find a cause.

UPDATE: After much research, it seems this only affect M-Sport cars, and I can't find a single person complaining about it on the 4 series. I think my car has some incorrect components or software or something. The 435i Sport and 335i Sport are mechanically identical, and I haven't seen any 335i Sport Limp Mode complaints.

The M Sport and Sport Lines have different cooling configurations. I have yet to see a 335i Luxury, Sport or Comfort Limp Mode, and I haven't seen a single person with a 4 series limp mode.

BMWNA is on the case but I'm not hopeful. Apparently I am the first with a 4 series Limp Mode according to them. I'm going to push them to replace this car as it has caused a huge amount of grief and anguish that shouldn't come with a $61,000 car.

Agreed. Sounds like a weird set of circumstances.

No limp mode on my F32 and hopefully I won't get it. I only have 2300 kms or so on it though.

Limp mode shouldn't cause you grief and anguish.

Only if you're just about to need WOT when passing or merging.

Thankfully my first 2000 k have been clean. Limp mode - very much displayed on the dash - was one of the many tricks my 2010 M3 DCT liked to play on me. Unfortunately, neither BMWNA nor the dealer took my problems with that car very seriously. Good luck.

Agreed. I may have went a bit overboard there.

Limp mode did give me quite an "oh sh*t" moment when I tried to accelerate onto I-287 and I had almost no power.

Luckily, mine were from a dead stop. Zero issues since the big boy fan was installed!

As did I. The larger fan seems to have helped.

I had the fan replaced and I got a limp mode almost immediately after. It's not a solution for a model line that shouldn't have this issue in the first place.

You had the larger fan installed? The normal sized fan didn't help. It's been fine for those of us that had the larger fan installed.

Have a 9/13 sport line n got the drive strain malfunction at 1200 miles. Not sure if it's limp mode as I could still go fine then. Dealer replaced the Vanos solenoid and that was it. Hopefully, won't have anything like that again.

Apparently the dealer cannot replace anything because it isnt throwing any codes. It wasnt throwing any codes in the secret menus during the limp mode either. All I see is asetericks and zeros in that menu, while my parents' 535i xDrive shows nothing. Something is up with this car bottomline.

I am pushing BMW to buy back or replace this car. I am no longer comfortable driving it especially since there is clearly no solution to a problem that this car can't have in the first place. I am speaking with BMWNA but they simply don't call back.

BMW has probably lost me as a customer for good. I was going to upgrade to an M4 and my parents were going to get a 550i xDrive after our respective leases were up, but now after the way I have been told to "deal with it" that simply isn't going to happen. I should not have to pull over on a 65 mph highway, shut off and turn the car back on again, and then attempt to merge onto the highway with traffic flying past at 65-75 mph with no launch control and no full throttle due to break in. They just tell to me to "deal with it."

I've had this car for 2 weeks and it has been in my possession for exactly 2 and half days. Completely unacceptable.

And to top things off the loaner car system was down, so instead of getting a BMW loaner the dealer had to get me an Enterprise car; a 2013 Volkswagen Golf that smelled sh#t and literally made me sick halfway home. Are you f##king kidding me?
