Just logging in to thank BMW for another 335 limp mode.

I hadn't had one in a couple months. I missed the cool sensation of my BMW feeling like a '05 Elantra under acceleration.

The new, "bigg" fan seems to have helped. Knock on wood. No issues since it was installed.

I had a '05 Elantra before my 335i so I could easily drive in limp mode for years

just curious, we should try to start a google document showing build date / model / transmission / and limp mode frequency or what was done to fix it. I have never had limp mode but reading about the frequency scares me.

Does it actually come on the screen and say "Limp Mode" or does the car just lose power?
My infiniti will go into a "limp mode" ie lose power, only if it overheats... which it has never done. Is this the case?
My 335 is on order so now of course I am concerned.

Your iDrive screen will mention "Drivetrain Malfunction" then subsequently go into limp mode.

Haven't had it happen to me personally but after reading stories of people on here and subsequently having it happen to my friend's 2013 F10 550i xDrive (he ended up turning it off and turning it back on later and everything was fine, hasn't had an issue in several months), that's what happens.

Many things can cause that to happen, one of them is overheating.

It's an engine de-tune when the computer senses an issue that could affect the safety of the motor and associated systems. Overheat, overboost, etc.

Had a buddy that installed a manual (no software) Turbonetics Turbo Timer on his VW...it would run one pass at the drag strip and go into limp (overboost). IIRC, boost gauge would read 2lbs at that point (stock is 12 or something) limp mode really neuters the motor.

Ecu to protect the engine and car.

If you got an M sport model, you have a higher likelihood of getting this.

Base and luxury don't seem to suffer from this, and the aux fan replacements have received mixed reviews in addressing issue.

Why would the m sport model have it? I though mechanically they are all the same.

Different cooling. And there is no error message--just loss of power.

Limp mode happens to many with no dash/iDrive malfunction messages.

The drivetrain thing is not this Limp Mode issue.

Got BMWNA involved and they are getting the dealer to replace all 4 possible causes: The radiator fan, the relay, the thermostat, and the DME(maybe?).

Obviously the Sport Line 4 series has the same cooling as a 335i M-Sport, because mine is a Sport Line and I've gotten it twice in 700 miles. No dash display or anything.

There is only one way to avoid it: drive it in Sport or Sport+ all the time. Don't use Comfort for a long period of time and then switch to Sport. This seems to trigger it.

What is build date of your car?

OK, so software shouldn't be the cause. Hopefully they get this fixed for you quickly.

When I triggered it, I had driven in Sport for a long period and then switched to Comfort

I don't think anyone has nailed down a consistent repro for it.

I've also had the auxiliary fan replaced already, and I got limp mode again 70 miles later.

The sport line 4 series has the smaller cooling system. Only the M-Sport has the larger cooling radiators. Applys equally to 3 or 4 series.
