It is all about RPM vs acceleration.
Regular mode will change gears at a low RPM. Sport mode will go higher and consume more gas. If you change gear at 4-5000rpm it can be easily +30% more fuel overall average.... the engine stays in lower gear expecting something. |

I did quite a bit of experimentation for the first few thousand miles in various driving conditions. In my case, there was about a 2 mile per U.S. gallon difference.
