Extended warranty?

Hi folks,

I know it's a little early to start thinking about buying BMW's extended warranty but do you think it's worth it? If I decide to keep the car past the 4 year limit I'll think I'll pony up some dough for it. Any reason not to?

Long way to go, but I will probably do the same as I usually keep my cars 6-8 years. You USED to be able to shop around and buy the warranty from whoever had the best price. But I heard that you have to buy it in person now with your car.

Up here in Canada it's $3,500 for 2 years and $4,400 for 3 years.

You can probably do better than that if you buy it with the car .. Mine was $2560 for 200 deductible, 100,000km and 3 years extension for the 435 (ie, 4+3=7 total), and that was from the BMW Dealer..

I also had it on the E92, and used it without issue. Kept the car for 7 years.

It very much depends on which BMW. Assuming you are interested in the 3-series (as this is the 3 series forum), I'd say no. The extended warranty is expensive for what it will cover. If your car needs to have the kind of work done to it that is equal in value to the extended warranty, don't buy the car. I think the warranty extends factory 3 years and upto 160,000km in Canada. So, your 7-year 3 series is going to suffer $4000 in repairs in 3 years? What a terrible car. Even swapping a turbo in 5-6 year old BMW would run around $1500. What's the $2500 for?

There are so many independent fixit shops and online stores selling 3-series parts the price of the extended warranty doesn't make sense.

On the other hand, if you had a 7-series or X5, extend, extend, extend. BMW will probably give you your money back to stop you for coming in for warranty work, especially on the X5.

At $ 4k for the extra, I'd agree that it's not so clear. But for 2500, I made money on the transaction by the end of the 7th year for the E92. Unless you do the work yourself to minimize shop labor costs, and have time to shop the world for deals, it doesn't take much to eat up the cost of the insurance extension. For example, on the 3 series, if you drive "with enthusiasm", you can pretty much guarantee that you will wear out at least one set of front end lower bushings on the suspension, you might get one vanos soleniod sticking, etc.. all of which which add up under normal wear and tear.

If you drive it like a Prius, then maybe it doesn't make sense. If you like to sleep at nights and drive the car to the end of year 7 like it was meant to be driven, then it's worth the peace of mind IMO.

Herb Chambers on Comm Ave, right? I got mine at their Sudbury dealership...maybe I'll ask them. But I recall when they tried to sell it with the car it was quite a bit more than that...about $1000 more I think.

Sudbury purchase here too. Got good price on the car and great price on trade but same experience w/ warranty. The "business office" guy was a total cheesehead (somewhere between used car salesman and circus performer) trying to sell every add on like I was an idiot (paint sealants, key loss protection, concierge bmw assist). Trying to bundle things in a bewildering array. I was quite straightforward and said only thing I would be interested in was the additional warranty / maintenance pkg and when it came down to that the price was quite high.

Yep, but that did change in April of this year.
Previously was possible (until April) to purchase a 6y / 160k for 2300$.
Now it's more 3500$.

Even at delivery, shouldn't be better than 3000$.

Check here.

This is not the extended warranty, this is the extended maintenence contract. 2 different things.

I think we had the same guy. Did he tell you about the f-d up wheel in his office while trying to sell the tire/wheel protection plan?? It was way after hours when we finally got processed by him. He went through the spiel on all the add-ons, but didn't push hard when we said, No, no, no, no, no...and maybe later (to the extended warranty). When I picked up the car he came out again as I'm going over it with the SA and tried to sell again.

Yep, sounds like the same guy. He didn't push hard either when we said Nyet but kept going on and on about this and that. And yes, he did talk about the wheel (also how much just the RFT's cost too let alone an OEM BMW wheel).

then this was the extended maintenance? Still seems to me to be reasonable. Was this recently? My ED msport should be in any day now and I'm considering this.

Right. I told the business manager I didn't want to hear his pitch. He said he had to go through it; argh. At the end of it I said "no" and he put it away ;-)
