Yesterday I went to a local cruise from our Az bmw group. We had a blast in Sedona and Jerome.
But sad story is my windshield has a huge crack. I am calling my insurance to ask about it. I had the 3M crystalline 70 on it Does it mean it is going to the junk yard with the windshield?

Do you have any experience from this?
what is the cost gonna be like with OEM parts?

Updates: Less than 6 months. Here it goes the second piece of windshield saint Gobain proves it sucks at the job.

Garage List
2015 BMW M235i  [0.00]
I had my 335i for 140 miles before a rock met my windshield and made a nasty crack. It was well beyond repair and cost $1,500 to replace with an OEM windshield. The HUD makes it more expensive -- and more reason for a dealer replacement, in my mind.

Good luck. My insurance did cover most of the costs.

Most every insurance company in AZ provides windshield coverage, so you should be fine. Your tint is history though; that's why I don't bother tinting windshields in Phoenix with all the rocks flying around.

Did you check with your insurance company to see if you have glass coverage?

Ouch. When I first moved to AZ way back when, every insurance agent I talked to was adamant that I should get glass coverage. Sounds like your agent let you down

You can check with your dealer to see who they use, or try Safelite. $1450 sounds like a lot; I'd expect closer to $750 or thereabouts. Unless maybe you have HUD, I could see that costing more.

You don't need an OEM windshield. It's literally the same exact windshield, the only difference is one windshield will have a BMW logo and the other will not. (If you have the Active Driving Assistant Camera, then the OEM will also say ConnectedDrive on the outside of the windshield.) If you are paying out of pocket, do NOT get an OEM windshield, it is totally not worth it. Glass is glass, windshield replacements from like Safelite are identical.

I had a cracked windshield at 2000 miles. I got quoted for a windshield through Safelite for $945 with Rain Sensor, HUD, and Lane Departure. You know what BMW's quote was? $6000 for just the part. I ended up getting the OEM one because my insurance covered the $6000 and I paid $250 deductible. But If I didn't have insurance to cover it, I would not even consider OEM.

Just get a third-party windshields. OEM windshields are a waste of money just to have a BMW logo on it. You will definitely not see nor hear a difference. Guarantee it. Plus, if you are worried about reselling with a third-party windshield, no one will care about it. Windshields crack all the time.

So if my second windshield cracked again and I have the insurance covered in the future Ian so able to get the OEM's right?

Yes, depending if your insurance company policy will cover OEM parts. For my insurance company, their policy is if the vehicle is within 14 months of when I made a new car purchase, they will replace parts will all brand-new OEM parts. After the 14-month new car period, they will use any brand since it will provide equivalent functionality and comfort.

Doesn't mean you should crack it on purpose to get an OEM windshield later because that would be wrong. But again, you need to see which provider your insurance company uses to replace windshields (most likely Safelite) and check their policy for using an OEM windshield at customer request.

What is $436 quoted for? OEM windshield or third-party? Under insurance or out of pocket?

That's not bad, I would just pay if I were you. If you're afraid of it happening again, consider glass coverage with a $250 deductible. But at this moment, just have safelite come out and install it for $436.

They are a great and very well known third party company/installer. They will come back out, no charge, if you are unhappy with the result. Plus, you don't want a dealer ever installing a windshield for you.

I've been through a decent number of windshields. Maybe a 8-10 in the past 17 years. Every once in a while I'll get a non-OEM windshield that has a bit of distortion in one spot. It's never been a big enough deal for me to complain (especially since I know I'll be replacing it soon enough anyway). But I've never had a similar problem with OEM BMW-branded glass.

Usually I'll request BMW-branded glass because of that, but I don't complain if the insurance company balks.
