320i - does your do this?
I have asked previously but not much response, and I thought maybe it would go away.....when I pull away/accelerate slowly at about 1200-1600 revs, it just isn't a very smooth feel through the diver area/steer column - I'm not sure I would call it a vibration, but I guess it's like when you put a manual car in third gear and pull away. Diff to explain. Once over say 1600 revs it doesn't happen, and in fact when in sport mode it it is fine because the revs are higher. Dealer says they can't see an issue - maybe it is normal? Or because it is petrol?

It happens to me too. But this seems normal because the engine wants to auto stop. Turn it off and see if this still happens. Explains why it doesn't happen in sport mode

Edit: ASS (auto start stop) activates when the brake pedal is fully depressed. Once you lift your foot from the brake (or turn the wheel, among other actions), the engine starts. The engine does not "want to auto stop" when you are already driving. Last edited by OC40; 06-21-2014 at 04:07 PM.. |

Its most likely the engine lugging a bit.
The torque converter locks up very early in the 8HP and if accelerating gently in ecopro or comfort the car in that rev range, it is most likely the same phenomenon you described (MT car in 3rd gear at low rev's) as the car will upshift early under gentle acceleration to conserve fuel. In sport where the shift points are later and revs remain higher you would not see this. Part of being a 4-banger, unfortunately. I get some Hyundai like vibrations on a cold start when the car is 1st put in gear. I have the 328 btw... |

OP have you tried cruising in a higher gear at say 30mph in an attempt to replicate in situations where you're not just "pulling away" or leaving a light? In otherwords if there's a problem with the engine itself you'll likely be able to duplicate anytime you're in that specific rev range. For example, a friend of mine had a low RPM vibration in his Mazdaspeed3. It was quite noticeable from off idle to about 1,800 rpm or so, it was especially bad below 1,500 rpm. Turns out he had a bent connecting rod (he was modded pretty heavily). Now you most likely don't have a bent rod but if you've got something else internally out of balance or causing an issue it may be more pronounced at lower RPM. At higher rpm the harmonics from the vibration can (emphasis on can) cancel eachother out a bit and make it smoother, in otherwords it masks the problem. Rautha could very well be right, just wanted to throw out a few suggestions on testing/duplicating the issue. |
