Speed Limit display enable - software update?

I've read some members have had a recent software update that enables this.

Can anyone provide more details? Any Australian owners had this done?

(Background: When I ordered my Jan 2016 build 25i, I was told it would come with speed limit display on the HUD, based on GPS and the forward facing camera. However, prior to delivery I was advised this feature was not enabled due to a high error rate from the front-facing camera reading Australia's road signs. Subsequently, all BMWs in Australia now have this feature without camera modification, and the software was upgraded to improve the camera accuracy, but it is not clear if this is available to existing owners as a software update)

I am in the same situation as you, the dealer is telling me it can't be activated, sounds like BS to me, Not happy at all.

I asked a Genius last December and this was the response:

Thanks. One of the techs at my dealer said he didn't think there had been any changes to hardware (camera), just software. Anyway, he's getting back to me. One of the things with my purchase is that this feature was offered in all the marketing blurb before I ordered....only to be told BMW Australia were not implementing it due to a high error rate when I came to sign.

Please advise us of your outcome, very interested in the result.
I don't understand how an $80 portable garmin can display it but my $70k BMW can not.

Hi guys,

I'm interested in this topic also.

I test drove an X1 with a build date of May 2106 that was displaying the speed limit info. I had a conversation with the dealer about it as he sat in the passenger seat.

My X1 with a build date of July 2016, didn't display the info. So I went back to the dealer and asked about it, and he said the cars built earlier than October 2016 could not display SLI, hardware differences.

When I asked about the one we test drove, and the conversation we had when it did display the information, he told me I was wrong, it didn't, and we didn't discuss it. He refused to go into it any further.

I tried to order one of those hardware devices that can display the SLI from map data... from a place called custom retrofit.... and got an email back from them saying not to bother, but to get an FSC code from them that can be coded into the car (by experts! Don't try at home!) because it had all the needed hardware, just needed the right software codes.

But the dealer refuses point blank. Says it is impossible.

I know that my car has the code "8TD - Decoding Speed Limit Info".... which I have since found out is a code that BLOCKS the use of speed limit info in Australia. Why block it, if the car can't do it? It is the same variant of the car as sold in Europe where the SLI is enabled.

I think BMW just don't want to update older cars to enable it.

Interesting!

I asked my dealer in Canberra about this and have been told the car has all the necessary hardware, and a retrofit is available (via software) which I can have done for the not insignificant sum of $AUD1,000. Not happy, and thinking about what to do. You see, when I was looking at the F48 X1 in late 2015, this was highlighted as a feature of the driver assistance package, and that was certainly a factor for me. However, it was withdrawn or BMW Aus recanted on its availability at around the time I ordered, citing issues with the camera system reading Aus traffic signs. Nevertheless I purchased the car and have been persistent in asking whether the problem has been overcome since. Now it seems it has. Personally, I think BMW Aus should offer the software update to early purchasers as a goodwill gesture, rather than gouging us $1,000 for something I certainly had the strong impression was going to be a feature of the car.

Perhaps we need to organize a campaign making that request?

I just had a look at the BMW brochure I have here titled "Brochure_F48_KAT_215_AUS.pdf" dated 17 February 2016 upon which I based my decision to purchase, and note that on page 6 it states speed limits info.

I recall asking the salesman about the omission after I took delivery of the vehicle, and he said BMW Australia had arranged the disabling for the time being for testing, and that it was rumoured it would be enabled at the end of that year (which was 2016). None of this was in writing, unfortunately.

ttimbo: I have been told I can get this FSC code for about 170 euros.... or around $330-$340 Australian. So $1,000 would seem steep!!!

AUS_Tin_Pusher: I saw that prior to purchase too... and mentioned it to the dealer while I was trying to convince him I had seen it in the test drive, and that we had spoken about it. "Errors and omissions are not the responsibility of BMW Australia" was all I got back from him.

I'm still looking into this FSC code with these guys on another forum.... I'll keep you posted.

Seems there is a slight hardware difference in the pre and post Nov 2016 X1 models... and this may apparently stop the use of SLI in the earlier cars.

Still not 100% sure why this would mean that they put in a specific code to stop the pre-Nov-2016 vehicles using SLI.... since it apparently wasnt even able to be used.

Thats like putting in a code to stop a car using a radio that didn't have a radio in the first place. Doesn't really make sense.

And given F48 X1's in other countries before Nov 2016 could use this feature.... seems odd.

I'm not sure about the Nov 2016 production date; my dealer has checked and re-checked, and tells me my Jan 2016 build misses out on compatibility by 2 months, ie, perhaps cars with production dates in March 2016 or later may be upgraded (??)

Today I remove the 8TD in the FA of my wife’s X1 and coded the BDC_Body, HU, Kombi and Kafas and now I have SLI in the HUD. Working perfectly!

X1 F48 September 2016 model.

The official spill from the dealers is ‘it can’t be done’. If there are no retrofit package in TIS then it’s not possible from dealer. But since I’ve been playing with my 1series since 2013 and now X1 I can honestly say that everything is possible albeit on how much one is willing to spend for the retrofit. By hey some retrofit are as cheap as chips - coding is only what’s required.

Sorry mate, I’m not familiar with Bimmercode. I use Esys and Rhiengold in my coding and error checking.

In the FA remove the 8TD save it and write the modified FA back to the car. Code (not FDL Code) the ECU listed above and you’ll have the SLI.

If bimmercdoe allows you to modify the FA then it is possible. However, I think Bimmercode and Carly only does FDL coding.

I am wondering if this will work on US models with HUD. Can you explain to me in detail how this process is accomplished? I am complete newb at this, but I am willing to learn if you can point me to the right direction.

Edit: Found the coding section and reading through them now.

Coding works in all bmw cars. However, be careful coz some mistakes can result in expensive repair and trip to a dealer to undo the coding. It never happened to me.... yet.

Its a very long topic to discuss and your first step will be to search bmw coding in the web.

I spoke to my dealer today, said can’t retrofit my 2017 built 2018 model x1, BS guess, in the manual it is there, but nowhere on dash, I tested a 2018 built 2019 model and it is there working.. any hints how to activate?! Thanks

update: With Bimmer code found the HUD and Combi SLI inactive, activated them, now can see display speed limit in the setting, activating it dows not display limit after I pass a sign (tested at night) will see if during day will not work, means it needs more ECUs to tinker with, I am afraid the head/rear/side camera ECU is missing in my car, thus most likely not possible to support SLI?!

Hello everybody,

I removed the 8TD from the FA by using the E-Sys & Launcher PRO. And right-click and code (BDC_BODY, HU_NBT_EVO, KOMBI2, KAFAS2, DSC2, SAS).
(Without SAS, it is possible with 5 modules (BDC_BODY, HU_NBT_EVO, KOMBI2, KAFAS2, DSC2).)

In addition, the Japanese F39 did some FDL codes and activated SLI.

Today, F48 / F39 and BIMMERCODO can't put KAFAS2 into expert mode, so I think E-Sys & Launcher PRO is necessary.


P.S.
7E FSC code is not required.

BMW Speed Limit Recognition

Similar to he other posts here, I was told that my BMW would have Speed Limit Recognition.
When the vehicle finally arrived, SLI was NOT included.
I took this up with BMW, and they advised that it could not be activated because it was not a simple matter of a software activation. They were very definite that the required hardware was not present in the car.

This didn't ring true to me. As a matter of relevance I'll disclose that I have quite highly qualified in the electronics field. I know from years of experience that it would be cost ineffective to have separate hardware for every configuration. I know for a fact that it is simpler and more cost effective to be able to switch the features in and out bu addressing the microprocessor (in BMW's case with an FSC code).

So I decided to investigate further.

It turns out that BMW told me a blatant lie.

I traced a BMW specialist service center in Europe who advertised that they could activate SLI with a genuine BMW FSC code.

I engaged them to do this, and arranged a suitable time for them to link to my vehicle with Team Viewer.

The result is that I now have SLI active in HUD and the Instrument Cluster. And contrary to BMW's claims - IT WORKS BRILLIANTLY.

Keep in mind that this is the original BMW SLI with an FSC code tied to my VIN - it's not an after market emulator.

So, don't believe BMW's lies. There are coders who can obtain the FSC code and activate the original SLI. Provided the car has the camera system top center of the windscreen, and HUD, it can be coded in with FSC code.

I have kept my FSC code on hand in case BMW deactivate it during servicing - I warn them each time that they will need to reactivate with the code, should they do anything to disable it.

I trust this post has been helpful.
