xDrive28i fuel mileage

I just drove 500km from Toronto to north east Ohio and got 9.4L/100km. Wondering what others are getting. I drove in Comfort mode. Do I need to drive in Eco-pro mode to get the fuel economy estimate for highway. I can get 8.4 in the city on Eco-pro if I work at it. Was expecting better on the highway.

After 2 full refuels I am averaging 10.3L/100km (calculated based on fuel fill and actual km), car onboard showing 9.6L/100km. Normal daily commute and one long drive so far. I expect fuel consumption to improve as the engine loosens. Will report back after a 300km drive tonight on the highway and will give Eco-Pro a go when cruising. I feel the claimed average of 6.6L/100km is unrealistic and unachieveable though no matter which mode is used. My other car has claimed 6.1 and actual 9.1 after 28000km.

Over 3,000 km, mine is currently averaging 8.55L/100km. And it is improving over time, using same traffic/roads. It's dropped from 12.6 (over first 250km) to 9.06 (over 602km) to 8.23 (over 504km) to 8.00 (over 610 km) to 7.44 (597 km) to 7.1 (the last being a drive with mostly freeway). Based on this, I expect to see low 7's, maybe high 6's

By comparison, my F20 M135i is averaging 8.05 L/100km over 53,000 km, so it is possible to run close to the stated fuel economy with some care. I always use 98RON fuel, which is the highest octane premium fuel readily available at petrol stations in Australia.

(Yes, for tax reasons, I log all fuel and distance on both our cars....anal retentive )

I'm averaging 9.3L/100km over my first 3 fill ups. 65% of it is usually city / traffic jam.

I have logged all fuel on all my cars for about 25 years - once you get in the habit it is difficult to break. I have not had to fill up my new X1 yet (only a week old) so I have no figures on that

Not really sure if it's correct to expect that actual fuel consumption figures will match what's advertised. I haven't been reading carefully lately and maybe am not really updated but can remember when I started having this interest for anything automotive (30+ years ago) that fuel consumption figures (and the standardized tests that produce these figures) were there to compare one car to another (I remember even reading some standard fine print disclaimer to this effect). Meaning that if two robots were to drive two different cars EXACTLY the same way, the tests would allow us to see which one would use more and which one would use less fuel (and maybe by how much). Again, this was ages ago so not sure whether the tests have come a long way since then and are now meant both to compare different cars and to give a good approximation of actual fuel consumption.

The problem with the latter is of course the foot pressing the pedal. Just in my case, no matter how hard I try, my foot is heavier when pressing a pedal connected to an S54 then when pressing one driving a B48!

I've gotten into the habit of entering fuel fills into my app each visit for the past 2 years. My wife wouldn't care less about keeping stats so I'm doing all the refuelling on the X1 for now.

Average consumption went down from 9.6 to 9.0L/100km (onboard computer) after my ~300km highway drive (speed limit 110km/h, cruise control set to 115 allowing for speedo inaccuracy of 3km/h). I reset the trip computer on the journey home, and saw 6.1 after the highway cruise with minimal traffic, on Eco Pro mode. After driving through suburban roads to get home it's at 6.3.

Maybe you could all log your stats at http://www.fuelly.com/car/bmw/x1/2016 ? Would be nice to see how you all get on and get some good averages with a large sample.

Today I went on a 70 km trip and used the Trip Info screen and I got as good as 6.4L/100km on the highway which is what I expect. That was in Eco-pro mode. The previous amount I reported was the overall mileage from the instrument cluster (which hasn't been reset since getting the car 26 days ago). I was thinking that was the mileage for just that trip which it isn't. So I am happy and compared to my 2011 Tiguan I trade in I am getting better fuel economy.

I am getting 8.8 after 2000km almost all the time in Comfort mode and 50/50 city highway.
