That's great! Although much improved design gives me the impression of being larger almost like the X3.

Exterior: great
Interior: huge letdown

That deep center console....looks very low class. And the shifter...don't even get me started.

If I was in the market for something like this, I would run to get the old model right now.
I'm sure it will sell really well. But most buyers don't see the things that I see. A great car - but this is not a BMW.

Let's hope they do better with the X3.

Nope.

From this I can only deduce that the X1 will get a 4-cylinder M-Performance model:

That is correct.

But most X1 drivers don't really care about that fact. In my opinion, xDrive should be a no brainer when you are having a SUV anyway.

It doesn't make any difference on how the engine is mounted - the X1 is no racecar and there will be no situation where you will recognise a difference in real life.

Interior looks great, but I am not a fan of the new gear shifter for auto transmission. That looks horrible and so much like an Asian car.

RWD is different than FWD, so if you don't know, or the others don't know, probably the "shut up" decision should be in your team.
A TRUE XDrive it is a very different animal since it is actually on dry pavement a sporty RWD vehicle. It is not about a "great looking little crossover", because Hyundai looks good too but they are a "great looking zero". It is about a vehicle that CAN be great looking ( I consider the actual one very great looking), and that can perform and be good as a whole; or as we can see, the actual one can be great, cool, practical and fun.

In regards with your statement that "they have to make best selling models such as these in order to finance their M cars", I can tell you that you are very naïve. None of these cars finance or provide for the M vehicles, that is a story to put kids to sleep. Companies that still make good sports cars, don't need vans or FWD crap to finance the sport ones. Not to mention, years ago, when BMW was selling 3,5 and 7, was still building great cars. Maybe this blah, blah, should stop because it is just childish and proves that some people are really naive. BMW sells a lot and is doing well and was doing well before.

Your comment with the "RWD compromise" is pathetic at least, especially when we talk about one inch in length gain and another one in width. Three adults will not seat properly in the rear of this car regardless, always you will fit only "Malcolm in the middle".

Not the last, obviously you have an opinion based on the "reviews" that you read, not on your experience. I drove the Active Tourer for three weeks in holiday, and is far from excellent; the term "Fantastic" is just a dream that engineers aspire to, and regardless how hard a fanboi tries, physics has its laws and a FWD can do that much.

Regarding the Megane, have you driven it? Great car, buts still you don't know what are you talking about.

Bottom line, I prefer 100% the old one with more polarizing design, a more powerful engine, a ZF 8 speed, lower body, longer wheelbase (I let you think why) and a RWD biased AWD. It is a fun car.
Maybe you should choose a more diplomatic way to express your opinions too. No I haven't driven the Active Tourer, but yes I have driven the Megane, but also FFord and F2000 single seaters, so I probably know a thing or two about RWD... My naive opinion as you might say comes from knowledge of the industry. How do you think Porsche finance the R&D of their 911? not with the sales of Boxsters and Caymans mind you. You can prefer the old model but I can bet you that this generation will outsell the previous one by far and will prove to be one of the most popular BMW's. You might like RWD, but the vast majority of the target people for this vehicle care about the safety of FWD, a bigger cabin space and maybe less about how "fun" it is to drive. People who like RWD will always find other vehicles BMW offers and that's why think the debate between RWD and FWD a little old. People always like to complain even though they have plenty to choose from.

Looks great but that center console around the shifter looks horrible. It's too deep and that tall shifter is horrible.

Design wise looks a bit better although the old x1 was very well distinguished from the x3,x5,x6...as for the the exterior it looks better on the sides , appears sleeker , the interior has nice seats , the center console looks like from 1er,3er , display looks like its from x5,x6 , the center analog cluster still appearas dated , the only thing that is totally different from any other bmw is the gear lever...Engines are top notch , quality is surely excellent , I don't see an M version anytime soon? why is that?..imagine M50d in this x1?

For what it is, it absolutely demolishes the competition which is the Q3 and GLA250. Neither of those vehicles offers a total packages like the new X1. Its also better looking in my opinion. While dynamically its a step back from the old X1 which was basically an E90 wagon with RWD and more powerful motors, this new X1 will prove to be a valid entry model SAV BMW.

I like it.

The inline-6 is designed for a RWD chassis and mounted longitudinally. This is a FWD chassis designed for a transverse engine layout, so it is pretty much physically impossible to put the inline-6 in this thing (BMW would have to engineer a new 6-cylinder engine).

I agree with you. I have no idea what that other guy was talking about. Are people taking their BMW X1 to track days?

And it's hilariously naive for him to think that FWD are all dull. Obviously never driven a MINI. Hell that car is more fun than a majority of the RWD cars in BMW's current lineup.

I personally liked the E84 more. ONLY because it was more car than an SAV. That said, I do feel this will be a better fit for what people want. It is much more SAV like, has more interior room, much more updated. I will be considering this for my wife, who likes bigger SUVs.

The new X1 looks great and will be a big seller. Only down side is the shifter and lack of 6 cylinder option.

What's with the "fake" kidney grills? They look closed off in the pictures. Is this because the engine is mounted transversely or is this just a preproduction thing?

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Agreed. Also just noticed that Estoril Blue will be available with M-Sport. I think that'll look really sharp.

I definitely wouldn't mind one of these to replace my ageing 4Runner. The trunk looks decently big too.

Still wish they would offer more wagons, but this isn't a terrible alternative.

Looks a lot better than the previous gen, but it just blends in with the rest of the cheaper SUVs out there like the Hyundai Tucson/Santa Fe Sport. Driving the wrong wheels and seems underpowered. Shifter seems like the outcome of cost cutting.

Other than that, the interior is a lot better! And thankfully, the headlights do not merge in to the grille.
