BMW Connected

I am able to ascertain my cars location using this app as many others will be. Does this constitute a tracker system that is eligible for an insurance discount?

In germany, I don‘t know any insurance who take care of this. But there are insurances that give you an discount when you are running an app for tracking your driving style.

When we apply for insurance here we are asked if we have a tracker ( not a driving style but a location tracker ) installed in the car. If you do the premium is reduced.

No. I think that is highly unlikely because it's not a 'secure' facility and the location service can be easily turned off. So I doubt an insurance company would regard it as a fully fledged tracker.
Having said that, I've paid to keep the Remote app active beyond the initial year via my Connected Drive account. My logic is that it might just help if the car is stolen and the numpties haven't thought to disable it before I can try to see where the car is. Realistically, the way to confirm whether your insurer will accept it as a tracker is to contact them for a definitive answer.

Hi. There are one or two insurance companies in the UK that allow a discount if they can track your driving style, usually for inexperienced drivers. I believe it means having a 'black box' installed in the car. I don't know how/where they are installed, or whether those boxes actually record where you are in geographic terms.
Proper tracker systems are installed in a concealed part of the vehicle, probably only known to the tracker provider/installer.

I just put yes when filling up the application. I work in insurance, they don't come and check what constitute a tracker but the connected technically is.

Just hope yours doesn't get stolen, as you'll find out the expensive way that Connected Drive isn't a tracker when they refuse to pay out.

I can't believe anyone 'working in insurance' would do this or recommend it.

In Denmark there are certain requirements for the tracker if your insurance company requires a tracker. Things like its own backup battery, movement alarm without ignition, power loss alarm, 24x7 connection to an alarm central and more. I can't believe that the rules for UK would be that much different.

The BMW connected feature is nowhere near the requirements.

Thanks. That makes sense BMW Connect is not in the same league as you describe.

There was a piece of paper that was inside my manual that said check with your insurance company. I called and they said simply.. so the app on your phone can tell you where it is? That's good enough. A lot of the cars have them now a days they said. I'm in the USA.

Boot button

Just found out there is a button near reversing camera that opens the boot. Thats easier than fumbling for fob.

From my reading of the Connected capability it only tells you where it was last time the ignition was turned off, provided somebody doesn't disable that on the iDrive. Even when enabled I don't think it tells you where it is when running. So it wouldn't constitute a tracker as defined by my insurer.
