28i vs m35i long term impressions

I test drove an xdrive28i the other day and I was pleasantly surprised. Especially in sport mode. The ride, handling, and acceleration were great. The only downside I felt were the seats.

Couple questions for you guys that have driven one or the other, or maybe both:

-Is the consensus the 35i is worth the upgrade? Or do members with the 28i feel that the car has enough power? I know this is subjective I'm just curious what people feel after owning the car for awhile.

-Does the 35i suffer from more "throttle delay" than the 28i? I'm just starting to read about this on the forums.

-How has the rear-view visibility played out? It's always brought up as a negative, so I'm curious how drivers have gotten used to it or dealt with it.

-Did everyone get used to the seats? By default they seem to lack a little lumbar (for me) and I couldn't get them adjusted quite right during testing. I also have a wide pelvis so the side grips were fighting me a bit.

I came from an x1 28i and I am more than happy with the upgrade. I can make 28i power at half throttle and still have some reserves. X2 rear visibility isn’t as good but it’s livable.

I am pleased.

I came for a 335 manual, the delay is similar (and yes I know how to use a clutch ) Visibility is okay. If you do a search there is a way to remove the center headrest which would help. I am chicken only because I leased this one. All I can tell you is I grin almost every time I drive the car. The inner child loves the power and handling. The adult likes the general practicality of the vehicle for passengers and stuff. In the pantheon of cars I have owned this right at the to of the list with my old Acura Legend GS coupe with a stick (look it up awesome car) and my Saabs. I like this a lot more than my 2013 335 stick. I thought I would never grow up and give up a stick but I haven't regretted it once. Drive one and then don't blame me if you buy it (or lease)

I can tell you with confidence that it matches an x5 50i in acceleration almost identically.

So I'll also chime in on this one. The wife's had an X1 since 2016 and the quirks with throttle etc are all the same. I usually drive more powerful cars.. heck, even the minivan is more powerful! I had a 5 series with a big motor and tons of mods like rounderman, but some of my mods were transmission flashes, which made all those things go away so having the throttle delay now is a little annoying, but I'm getting more and more used to it. Circling back to the power.. the regular 28i motor is not enough for me, so if it didn't come out more in the m35i than I wouldn't have been interested in this motor for my own purposes.. perhaps one with a jb4 or boot mod would have made me happier, but I have never driven in one. Also the exhaust and tones of the m35i puts a big smile on my face from startup, big big plus that sways me. Rear visibility never bothers me.. I look in the rear view mirror and I can still see out enough. Backup camera works great. Seats are now moved comfortably for me.. it took maybe two or three weeks of me adjusting it around. They are a far cry for comfort compared to my 5 series.. but those seats were designed of different purpose. Still I do not get any sore back from this, but it's hugging me VERY tight in comparison that I prefer to take my winter jacket off when I sit in the car so I get the perfect fit for me.

Also on a side note.. prices can be negotiated on for sure. I know I got myself a crazy deal with stacking loyalty credits and a bunch of things that aren't commonly available. I ended up paying the price of a regular car. Of course this would have pretty much applied to any BMW I would have bought. Is it worth $10k difference? Some say that could be another half a car. It is steep when you look at it that way.. but if you got a regular X2 and tried to throw money at it to be the same.. well then yes you're getting there (exhausts, brakes, front LSD, engine mods/tunes, seats). Go drive one, it's in a different ballgame performance and sound wise.

I can't for the life of me find a m35i to test. I'll keep looking!

Does anyone with a 28i have long term opinions on performance? Does today's version of a JB4 bring up performance to an acceptable level? Or is the car good enough in sport mode already?

I was very happy with the 28i at first, by the end of the lease I was flooring it everywhere and wanting more. Keep in mind the regular x2 has a lower torque limit on the trans so a tune will put you out of spec and could cause reliability problems.

I hear that and totally get it.

Any others want to chime in? Specifically with 28i long-term opinions.

I've had a hell of a time trying to get lease quotes from BMW on 35i's. It's almost like they don't want to go through the trouble. The price difference is big enough that I'm considering just finding a nice condition x28i on the used market.

Hey guys with the m35i, is that extra storage compartment still there underneath the cargo area in the back? Was wondering if there were any differences between this and the s/x28i.

Century West BMW in Hollywood has a used M35 that you should be able to drive.

How about a loaded X2 BMW press car with 691 miles on the clock and $16,000 off msrp? Buy an extended warranty and you’re all set.

Updated my location, I'll probably have to drive a bit to test drive one. Bend, Eugene, or Seattle maybe.
