F48 X1 Xline - what one to chose?

Hi,

Narrowed down my search to 2 nearly new X1s

Both about are around 10 months old and done around 5000 miles

18i Sdrive Xline - metallic paint, tech pack 1 and 2, sports seats, Dual clutch auto

18d Sdrive Xline - Metallic paint, 19" upgraded rims with RFT, tech pack 1 and sports Automatic transmission - infact it looks identical to the car in the marketing shots

Theres about a £2000 difference between the 18i and 18D in cost - largely made up from the jump in engines/transmissions

We have only test drove the 18D in M Sport trim and I have a slight concern the 18i might be a tad underpowered

Also the entry level DCT is only offered on the 18i which leads me to suspect its inferior to the auto sports trans

Can anyone give me some advice/thoughts here?

Can't give you any input on those two.
However , in case its of interest, I bought my X1 from an auction buyer (he is Scottish) - deals direct with BMW etc.
I gave him the exact spec of what I wanted and ultinately got a used BMW direct from them for about £2k less than forecourt price. It was totally hassle free so if this approach is of interest to you, message me and I can give you his details.

I have a March 2018 18i (1.5litre) sDrive xLine Auto (Dual Clutch) and it has been trouble free.
Over almost 30K miles I've averaged 40mpg and found the performance to be well up to par and certainly better and more economical over the UK area where we live, close to UK Peak District, than my previous troublesome Q3 1.4TFSI dual clutch auto. I had problems with that one and rejected it, although accepted a good deal on a new Q3 replacement. That wasn't perfect either, so traded it in after two years for the X1, which is also a much better drivers car and have been impressed by the auto box. Only issue with the X1 was having to have the circular tailgate badge replaced a few months ago due to corrosion around the edges. No complaints re the dealership either.
The only real downside is the road noise from the XL (non-RFT) tyres. Have a set of BMW 17" winter wheels/tyres, bought from the dealer and they give a more compliant and slightly quieter ride because of the deeper sidewalls (205/60 as against 18" 225/50 summer tyres).
The car will be coming up to its 3rd birthday in a few months, so I'm mulling over whether to keep it for another year or trade-in against a new one. Several chums at my golf club have X1s and all are very happy with them. Also, a long term ex work pal was so impressed by mine that he traded in a Merc e-Class cabrio for a 2.0D xLine X1 just before the first UK lockdown. He had a very good deal, saving more than £2K and is happy with his - only complaint being that he can't yet buy a set of BMW mud flaps for his 2020 model!

Thanks for this - great to hear from an actual owner

the 18i model ive found does tick near enough all our boxes - just slightly concerned as to why the Dual clutch auto is only offered on that car

Also wondered if that will affect resale 5 or so years down the track

Nice to hear that, performance wise at least that you are more than happy with your sdrive 18i

I do much prefer the xline trim over the M Sport versions which probably puts me in the minority!

It is still an auto, but being a sDrive as opposed to an xDrive. The sDrive has no front to rear drive shaft hence the rear wheels have no drive to them with no transmission components. Less to go wrong!

If you look after it well, it will make little difference if any.

Personal choice really. My new xDrive 2.0i M Sport (LCI) in my view with the M Sport package (without the front round fog lights) is the better looking car of the two, and because I was buying new, it was a personal no brainer for me.

Yes, but even in 18D the auto is the sports transmission rather than the DCT. I Don't think we really need xdrive so s drive in any varient would suffice

I still like the facelifted version in xline and msport, I think it makes the older model look, well pretty old!

I think we just prefer the contrasting chrome grille on the xline over the M Sport

That may be so, but the OP was being specific, hence I gave him the answer concerning the DCT on the 1.8i.

I know - I was the OP

Bottom line seems to be 18i is adequate for what most would be using it for on UK roads

so now its us just deciding if the fairly big jump in extra cost is worth it and or will be seen again when resale happens

I see you live in Scotland! Highlands or Lowlands? If I were you I would have a spare set of wheels with winter tyres on.

Central belt - just outside Edinburgh

The 18i dealer rang today and said they will deliver free of cost

the 18d dealer also rang saying they can try and work out something - dont buy the other car without talking to them

will see what tomorrow brings

Both cars specd as they are has the 18d about £950 dearer from new

Tech pack 2 on the 18i is a fairly big chunk of money but would i really miss it if I didnt have it - probably not

I like the 18i comes with sports seats

I like that both come with tech pack 1 and sun protection glass.
I dont really care that the 18d comes with 19" upgraded alloys (infact it might make the ride a worse)

Theres about a £2300 difference in changeover price at the moment - i reckon for me to even consider the 18D that would need to be £1500 or less

I have tech 1 and tech 2 pack. It depends on what year they were manufactured. I have HUD, and that is in my view well worth the money and with my car was included in one of the packs as was pro nav with larger screen.
The diesel is now going out of favour, no matter what people say. Sales are down by a massive amount. If 10 months old they are pre lci.
Are they M Sport? If so the suspension is harder, unless they have adaptive dampers.
Edit. The sport seats are must. The non sports are unbelievably poor in comparison.

Both Xline and both come facelifted (with 8" screen as standard)

Ive read a few people saying that regarding the normal seats actually

The 18d will sit of 19" RFTs which probably wont help the ride

I do love the storm bay that comes in though - although the mineral grey also works well with Xline

I mean I think we would be happy with whatever we chose (coming from a Renault Kadjar) its just the debate over paying 1.5 - 2K more for the 18d over the 18i

I think the 18i is nudging ahead to be honest

I need to give my figure on the 18d tomorrow - I might ask for £1K off and see what they say - i think they will say no and that closes that option

The mineral grey is a great colour. The storm grey is considered to be for the younger people. In my view it could go out of fashion and be the less desirable in a few years time. If you opt for the 19" wheels, you will find they give a harder ride. Also be advised, there is quite a bit of tyre roar at speed, although less so on very smooth tarmac.
You cannot get Run Flat Tyres on 2020 facelift models. They all come with normal rubber with either a mobility kit or as I have a space saver spare

Yes. Face-lift version does not have round fogs. What info do you have on the other car?
When I say 2020 Face-lift, I am talking about April 2020 facelift onwards when there was a price rise in the UK.
Shown is the metallic grey LCI 2020 xDrive 2.0i M Sport built 9th September 2020.

Yep, that's exactly what they entail

Reversing cam is good to have

Other stuff I'm not overly fussed about but better to have than not

HUD was a requirement for me on my x2 and I will pretty much consider it a must-have on any future vehicles, it's that big a deal in my book and that much a game changer from a safety standpoint.

It is not just cool, in my opinion, it is one of the best things to have. It gives more detailed information such as the correct lane etc when using Navigation Plus.

Put my deposit down on the 18i Xline

In the end id rather sacrifice some performance for some bells and whistles

We are a 1 child family and most of the driving is local so we dont need some high powered machine

Coming from a 1.5 Diesel kadar im sure the 18i will be fine

Funnily enough the fact it had sports seats had more of a sway given there fairly cheap add on cost

Ive read alot of grumbles about the standard seats
