Difficult for me to understand how you’d cross shop a 911 with a mustang costing half its price. Not a hit on the mustang, just that’s a pretty big delta. It’s either worth it to you, or it’s not.

I’m interested in a 911 also. Have the money, but it doesn’t seem like a great time to spend it right now. Will wait and see how the next 6-12 months go. Too many variables.

Here are my 2 cents.

If you can afford it. Do it.

The CPO warranty is only worth one year since your weather only permits you to drive the car 6 month/yr.

It's a fair comparison given the roads here. There are zero curves, absolutely ZERO, so a small black V8 that likes a few revs gives you a pretty good feeling of stupid fun with the top down, really does. And I think it's worth asking yourself if it is worth the extra 40K to go Porsche.

It's also a super bright colour, which I thought I wanted but not sure I want to attract so much attention with a 991 as it looks brand new and may be a bit ostentatious.

I'm going to be grumpy today, I feel it is a very good with the options it has and that CPO in it's glove box but guy said to hold and see what happens.
I was in the same bought a few years ago and I couldn't imagine making this decision during the pandemic. I narrowed it down to a new F-type base, Cayman 718, M2 (N55) and MX5 ND RF. When I found that my least expensive option put the same smile on my face as the others I couldn't justify spending substantially more. I was also a little biased towards reliability since I had the notorious N54 in both of my BMW's. In hindsight, I still don't regret the decision but I do sometimes miss the brand and prestige that comes with driving the other cars.

Like most of us here, I always loved Porsches, had a poster of a 930 on my bedroom wall. Never thought I’d be in a position to have any Porsche, let alone a 911. I also tried to rationalize not owning one....they are expensive, another car can do what it does etc. However, I made the mistake of starting to test drive them and renting them from https://realcar.nyc/fleet , really look at how they are put together so to speak. I am also in the Corvette forum and you read all the hate about 911s in particular and how they (corvette owners) feel they have the better car and for half the money. However, go check out the C8 section and read about all the issues (like engine failure in a couple hundred miles) they are having and the base C8 can’t even be taken on a track.

I know I sound like a fanboy, but whatever, Porsches are special vehicles, even a base Macan. I’m on my third Porsche now (all purchased CPO) and now on the verge of contemplating special ordering one exactly to my tastes. There are things about a Porsche that are almost inexplicable or hard to measure. But you see the fit and finish, how things don’t really ever rattle, how you can drive it hard and it doesn’t go into heat sink mode, etc etc. And unlike people who own other higher end cars, people who own Porsches actually put miles on compared to Ferrari, Mclaren or Lamborghini owners.

There’s a Jay Leno video he just published on the 992 Targa 4S. He kind of sums things up nicely. Porsches are overall generally special vehicles and if you love cars and driving, and have the ability to own one, even for a short while....do it. You can always sell later and get your money back or at least a great portion of it.
Totally agree with you. Porsches are quite a great rides and you should not be anxious about it if you really want that car. Give it a shot!

Agreed. Nothing. And I mean nothing feels like a Porsche.

I'm on my second and definitely not my last.

but it's not an extra 40k, since the porsche will depreciate at a much lower rate than the mustang, plus the porsche has warranty and the mustang doesn't

it may well be that in the end the mustang costs slightly less than the porsche in overall annual cost, but it's worth it...at least many people think so.

as a mentionned before I tried the v8 domestic (c7) good enuf approach before and I went back to porsche

if you haven't had a p car before you can't appreciate fully what the experience brings and what you would be missing out on if you never pulled the trigger

I would not buy a expensive car, until this pandemic is over. Even though, I live in Switzerland, where the economy does/did not take a huge hit. Espcially in our well payed and not pandemic-affected jobs, my wife and I work.

I picked up my 993 three years ago (Oct 28, 2017), I usually swap my toy's every 3-5 years and I have no desire to do that with this car. I could sell it for more than I paid for it, and get something faster that handles better but frankly for the weekend cruises this car is plenty of that. It is comfortable enough and I just love the look of the thing. If you think your heart is set on Porsche then that's what you should get because you'll regret it later if you don't.

This is the day we picked it up, just after detaining at Pfaff in Vaughan.

Maybe its just me but I will play contrarian here. I have found that the more expensive a car is the less I use it vs my other cars. The expensive one becomes the garage queen as I am always saving it and putting the miles on my lesser cars. Now I think your fun car should not be too expensive so you use it. My pristine BMW 440IX with PPK gets few miles while my old tuned Subaru 5 speed Turbo got 156,000 miles before I blew up the engine.

I think that tends to happen, but so what? it's more about quality of those drives than quantity. Scarcity helps with appreciation. The best way to get bored of something is to do it all the time.

having a really sweet ride and a more ordinary but still fun car is the best case scenario for an enthusiast...hopefully one day I can get there!

I hear both arguments you are all making, hence I sat on the fence. Won't lie, I am still churning. It is a stunning car, I just feel it is a bit too showy for anything other than a dedicated drive. When i rented a base 997 a couple years back I dropped the kid at school one day, picked him up from baseball, not sure if i could do that with this car.

I am also in 2 mind re. 997 and 991, I dunno, i've gone and confused myself.

in saying that, if it wasn't a pandemic i'd have bought it.

I see you are in Toronto.
With winter now getting close and likelyhood of you storing the car is very high. I'd get it for the following:
-You'd satisfy your need to have it
-You likely can squeeze a few drives until the salty pellets starts to hit the ground, likely further reinforce your desire for it, and then that Stang will likely disappear from your memories already.
-If God forbid the economy collapses in the next 6 months and you need to sell it, you likely will not lose much of the initial investment, and if things remain normal then you know you got what you have hunted for this whole time. This isn't ordering a new car, someone else will eventually buy the car you want, then you are back to looking again.

Alfisti Have you considered taking the $xx that you are considering spending on a Porsche, and instead selling your daily driver for $yy, and buy a nicer car for daily driving, for a total price of $xx + $yy?

If you are leasing your daily now, see if you can negotiate an early termination in exchange for a nicer car at the same dealer group.

This gives you a potentially more enjoyable automotive experience on a daily basis, without the worry, expense and storage space requirement of an extra/low usage vehicle.

Your profile lists an X3. Potential upgrade vehicles could be:

X3 M40i
X3M
X5 M50i
Any of the M-B or Porsche SUVs, or Jag or LR for that matter.

Let's say (if you own the X3) you can sell it for $30k, and buy a 991 S coupe for $50k. (all figures USD)

$80k purchase price gets you into a 1 or 2 year old Macan Turbo with factory warranty remaining. 4.1 seconds 0-60.

Or a 2 year old X5 M. 3.8 seconds 0-60, plus more space than the X3 or Macan.

Nicht schlecht.

Play with the numbers and see what works.
