Talk me in or out of an X2M35

Hi everyone ~ I’m looking at a 2019 X2 M35 ~ Ive owned 4 other BMWs - coupes..328, 335, M240, and currently SUV x3 M40. I’ve watched a few reviews but figured Id come to the sources ~ owners. Please share why you would or wouldn’t recommend the car. Thank you

I happen to drive a 2019 X2M35. I personally love the car. I am an older gentleman with various aches and pains. I came out of 2013 335 stick before this one. I had driven almost exclusively stick shifts when they were available. Quick run down of some of my cars so you get perspective of what I have driven which is the basis for my opinion 1977 Firebird (first new car) 350 engine auto. 78Celica GT (first stick) some family type cars (all stick Mrs. Rounderman is cool that way) Saab 900s (first European, 1993 Acura Legacy GT coupe, 96 Volvo S70 T5 (the go fast version) 2003 Saab 9-3 another couple Acura TSX and then the BMWs.

generally I like cars that go fast, handle well, I like the European ride better than Japanese but I was happy enough with those cars .

What I love about this car is performance and handling ( I drive almost exclusively in sport mode with adaptive suspension). I don't track the car I have done autocross once and a 1/2 day M road day at a track.

I have no illusions about my skill. To me the car hits all the sweet spots, fast, handles well, hint of practicality, ride height is better than a sedan for my old back, decent gas mileage(mid 30s on the highway when I behave) and has been pretty trouble free. I find it comfortable at 5'11" 202 pounds

What I don't like, is no android auto, I did not opt for CarPlay and Mrs. Rounderman is very unhappy it doesn't have blind spot warning. I also like the HUD. My lease was up last May and I did not hesitate to buy it out. This is one of my favorite cars ever and possibly number 1 (I am old and forget stuff)

I would recommend the car since you have owned other BMWs and understand they aren't cheap to maintain regardless of where it gets done.

Did I mention heated seats and steering wheel, really like them as well and I have the sport seats in magma red, I find comfortable on road trips even with my bad back.

God luck and good hunting, let us know what you decide

This is very helpful. Thank you. Nicely said and some of your reasons are the exact of why Im leaning towards it. The X3 is a different beast but the X2 M35 is a niche, unique, sometimes unwanted from the very family it lives among but it’s also the most powerful 4 cylinder ever produced by BMW. That I like.

Enjoy yours - non blind spot monitoring and all…and perhaps I will have one soon as well. Appreciate your post.

The car is as fast as I want. It is very easy to hit ticket speeds. (not that I would know (triple digits))

It is definitely a niche that makes me smile. I will seriously consider the new X1M35 when it comes out. I don't like the spy photos of the X2, too slanted like an X4 or X6 kind of takes away some of the practicality.

In any event I find the hunt is every bit as enjoyable as the capture

enjoy

My biggest gripe is the throttle response/lag. The car itself drives like a raw animal vs a more refined luxury ride. I too have had a lot of cars/experience and I changed from an e60 535xi to this because I did blow my back and I would literally roll out of my car to get out! That car I had for a while and modded it out in many ways. It is like a few ft longer and wider, but the seats were way nicer, the sound proofing etc was a billion times more.

But...

The m35i gives me smiles and giggles because it's stock with the exhaust, brakes, seats, LSD. Sure I added a little more gusto with the Jb4 and one of these days I'll be able to get onto a dyno for fun. It is so tiny, different handling because it is light. (Although FWD biased so not the same drive as my E60). The X3 m40i would be more luxury drive like my E60. It was a tough call for me what I was going to do to replace the E60 with my bad back but the m35i model came out just in time. Just enough power and goodies to make me look twice at it. I would say you should drive it as you might "like" the X3 drive and hate the downgrade/sportier drive of the X2. The X3 b58 motor sounds grumbly nice and has a lot of power. It is geared maybe more towards highway. The X2 is very quick because of the pickup and weight maybe up to 60 or 80mph.

Well I almost bought one but not enough for my trade. Current x3 M40. She’s lovely so will stick with it for a bit BUT the right deal and I may reconsider.

I do love a nimble and quick bmw…. it sounds like the best parts of all my previous BMWs… the efficiency of my 328, the steering and firmness of my E92 335, the power and nimbleness of my ‘17 M240, and the echo/rumble of my x3m40.

Thanks for your opinion ~ it helps greatly.
