X2 Ride Quality and Noise

Hi,

I was curious about the ride quality and road noise in X2s. I'm particularly interested in non-sport (18-inch wheel) model. Is it noisy (road and/or wind) compared to a 3 series?

Appreciate for any input.

I have 20" run-flats on my X2. Coming from a 3 Series, it is night and day regarding noise and ride quality. Even with the 20s and low-profile Pirellis, the X2 is much quieter than the 3 Series. The cabin is quieter. The engine is much quieter. Ride quality is smooth and quiet and it handles great. I imagine 18's with a higher sidewall than the 20s would make it even better. No complaints at all with the ride quality/road noise of the X2, and that's with 20's.

I’ve had multiple 3 series loaners in the 3 years of owning an x1 (now x2 m35i) and I always tried to fiddle with the windows on the 3 series because it seemed like one was cracked.

I’m not saying the x1/x2 was quieter, just different, more uniform, while the 3 series seemed to be coming from somewhere...I just couldn’t pinpoint it.

Surprisingly, I absolutely love the X2. I never saw myself owning an SAV, but I was drawn to the different style and was ready for something different (after driving an E92, a Mercedes C Class, and 2 F30s). If I have any "issues", it would be the back-up camera and rear parking sensors. They are very different from the 3 Series. On rainy days, the back-up camera is pretty useless. The sensors work fine, but they let you get a lot closer to objects than my other cars. Just takes some getting used to, I guess. I'm one of those guys that always has buyer's remorse and I second-guess my big purchases - Not this time. I love the X2. Also, I live in the Washington, D.C. area and in two months, I have only seen 2 other X2s on the road, which gives it a uniqueness factor.

I recently drove from Seattle to Atlanta and did not find the road noise or ride quality to be bothersome after driving the x2 16 hours a day.

I've had x3 rentals I've taken on road trips and did find it to be slightly better. But not by much.

We make the underbody panels for the x3 and they are supposed to be better insulators than the normal panels. It looks the same to me, who knows?

I started hearing a strong wind whistling sound coming from the passenger side window, even with the window completely up and at regular city driving speeds. Wonder if anybody else noted something similar.
Update 5/3: I noticed that the upper section of the passenger side mirror was not perfectly flush with the base. The difference was only a couple of millimeters. I was able to push it in so that it's flush now and the sound disappeared.

I have the similar situation, just pick up my sDrive 20i M-Sport X this month, it came with run-flat tire and M-Sport suspension and 19" wheel, needless to say it provides noise and bumpy ride, but this is the only fittings I can buy from our dealer. I'm thinking of replacing all those noisy, bumpy and slippery tire, hope this help! Besides, it came with sport seats that doesn't fit my wide fat butt, sitting on the side bolster(not the back one) felt uncomfortable after a long ride.
Coming from F30 makes me reluctant to drive the F39 with its current settings. Don't know what else to do make it more comfortable.

After having test driven many other small/mid SUV's I found the X2 (M35) to be the quietest and most composed. You hear enough of the engine to feel engaged with driving, but it has a pretty refined feel of luxury. The only other vehicles that came close were the Jag E-Pace and Range Rover Evoque - but had nowhere near the same level of driving dynamics. I wanted to fall in love with the Volvo XC40 (love the design), but was so disappointed in the ultra-light steering feel, and the lack of sound insulation in the cabin. I considered waiting for the updated Audi Q3, but they keep pushing back the release date, and honestly, I feel like I see a million Q3's and Q5's on the road here in the northeast - the X2 seems to have a bit more exclusivity and seems way more sporty.

My X2 resembles a 3 series, not too rough and decently quiet

So I just got an x2 loaner it's a 28i x drive gave my 3 series 2018 for service and I feel like the x2 is way louder in terms of cabin noise especially on the highway not sure if it's good to compare a loaner to a new car but that's just my personal experience, however it does seem like the transmission is better on x2 and acceleration as well a lot more smoother, but this might just be because I drive my 3 series in eco pro at all times, take this with a grain of salt but I think you should test drive it for a real comparison

Hello, hope I am not hijacking the thread, as my question is related. I am planning on ordering the X2 xDrive20i M Sport, but I am concerned with the ride being too stiff for Greek roads and wanted to ask some advice on specing the order in the best way possible.

I have 3 options for suspension:
- Non-sport: should be softer, but could be wobbly and I will miss the ability to have the stiffer option
- M Sport: i have it on my F20 and find it hard, word is it's even harder on the X2
- Dynamic Dampers: supposedly best of both worlds, but the dealer said it actually makes the m sport even stiffer in sport mode without real softening in comfort

Probably will get the dynamic dampers as it is very little difference in cost to the static m sport.

Now, i also wanted to avoid runflats. The default rims are 19" with rft, but I can get non-runflats in 18" for same price, or 19" with non-rft with "performance tires" for around $1500 more! I think the 18" make the X2 look less interesting, but before shelling out $1500 for the 19" with the performance tires, i would like to ask your views here on whether I can expect a marked improvement in ride comfort vs the runflats. Also feel free to weigh in on your view of X2 with 18" wheels.

hi Pandrath
if you're after ride comfort but want the lowered look of the MSport, then I recommend the dynamic dampers. I have that on my car with MSport suspension, 19 inch wheels and RFTs.

The ride on 'soft' setting is nice, little firm, but not jarring...bit like traditional small BMW ride. On 'firm' setting it's noticeably more firm, occasionally jarring, but still bearable. My research said that the 'firm' setting is about the same as non dynamic MSport suspension.

Based on my previous E90 BMW 335i, going from RFT to performance non-RFT (Goodyear Eagle f1 A3) made a huge difference in ride comfort, noise and handling!

cheers

Thanks a lot for your input. Any idea why BMW is offering the option of switching the standard runflat to performance non-rft with the exact same wheels and tire dimensions, but is asking $1500 (actually $950 before taxation) for this option? Even performance non rfts shouldn't be more expensive than rfts... it also adds 4 grams to the emissions figure, meaning these tires are less efficient...

Many thanks
Pedro

I'm guessing the extra cost is because it's a "special order" item, as the RFTs are fitted on the normal production run?

Could be, even though with 18" wheels it's the same price with rft or non-rft (but these are not listed as performance tires...)

tyre noise...and wind noise

So
i've had my X2 now for 1 month.

No issues with ride comfort, especially as I have adaptive suspension and run it on normal most of the time. But even on 'sport' mode although it's noticeably firmer, it's not jarring.

On the downside the tire noise on the 19" Continental RFTs that came with the car is pretty noticeable, esp after 100kmh.

Also the wind noise again around that speed is quite apparent.

I'm hoping that when time comes to change my tyres I can find a quieter non-RFT. However, with the wind noise there's not much to do except accept it. It's not thaaaat bad, just noticeable.

cheers

Bingo! I had exactly the same issue and I've opted for a very different route to avoid hard ride and tyre noise.

I've ordered the very basic 2.0 i SE XDRIVE in the UK and then loaded it up with 3 packs plus leather seats and heated seats = £5,000 of options but got car with discount for circ £33K.

Reasoning:_

The SE comes with 17 inch wheels and 225/55 conventional tyres which gives a 5" sidewall. I should get a much more cosy and soft ride from this but no doubt others will point out I'll also get less incisive and less sporty handling.

Car due in July/August and I'll tell you if I made a winner or a booboo!

I have test drove both 120I M-Sport with 18" and X2 M-Sport with 20" before my purchase, the X2 is much firmer, then I picked X2 with 19", a fairly difference than the 20" but still harsh. However, the 18" on X2 looks less appealing, I still backed my decision on the 19", but plan to get rid of the run-flats and go for some tires with softer side-wall.

I have an X2 x28i non-sport (19" wheels) and the ride is pretty darn smooth. I haven't noticed any noise beyond the usual sitting in a car driving noise. It doesn't block everything out, but it's far quieter than my previous car (Mercedes GLA 250 4Matic). That car had a sport suspension and my X2 does not. The difference is night and day. I feel more like I'm gliding down the street.

The suburbs where I live have a lot of speed bumps and it takes them extremely well. Stiffer suspensions usually have me feeling each and every bump. I much prefer this soft ride personally.

It seems my M-Sport suspension and run-flat tough sidewall play an important role in harshness and noise. The car is generally quieter than my F30 but the annoying noise begins after 100km/h. Non run-flat should be a good solution.
