End of lease inspection?

I’ll be turning in my X1 this Sept. with 26k miles (3 yrs/36k miles). Also purchased lease excess wear and tear that covers up to $5k as well. The car is in very good condition imo (tires prolly need to be replaced, both fog lights are cracked, three windshield chips and a couple minor scratches here and there from driving up and down Tahoe).

Any tips/advise on end of lease inspection? Should I have my insurance (USAA) replace my windshield?

Looking back at my lease agreement how do I calculate the rent charge? (should have paid closer attention)

Also, I got a rebate from USAA for $1k and yet they only gave me $930 for cap cost reduction. Why didn’t the I get the full amount?

Apologies for the lengthy post. I appreciate any tips/advice/feedback

Lease excess wear and tear is a waste of money IMHO, but since you already paid for it, just turn the car in and see what they say. By the way, you can have them inspect it ahead of time to see what damages you could be liable for if any.

Learn how to calculate your lease payment.

https://leasehackr.com/blog/2016/4/1...yments-by-hand

Isn't your USAA rebate supposed to be applied by you? I've never done it, but the BMWCCA rebate is applied for by the buyer, not the dealership.

Can I pick your brain as to why lease excess wear and tear is a waste of money? I figured if something happens to the car bedsides what my insurance will over, then I’m good. I think I paid around $1.9k for $5k coverage.

I don’t put any money down. But I maxed out the 6 MSDs.

We should have the same region since I’m in SF, ur in OC.

It’s available to all usaa members. It’s valued at $1k but they only gave me $930

Your residual has wear and tear built into the lease. You can have dings, scratches, even curb rash up to an extent and you will not see a penalty. The amount of damage is unexpectedly generous. You would have to have smashed a bumper and a headlight to reach close to $5k in damages and if you paid $1.9k then that's like a $1.9k deductible on your insurance. Then what if nothing happens to your car? You just threw $1.9k out the window. Think about it this way: you are already paying for a lease excess wear and tear fee: it's called car insurance. Except now you are paying it twice while not even having to use it. Just use the one you are already paying for. Just a general rule of thumb: anything they sell you in the financing office is pure profit for them.

By the way, BMW will mail you an overlay guide on what items are considered normal wear and tear. It looks like this:

You can also turn in you lease to any BMW dealer, it doesn’t have to be where you bought it.

Not exactly true. From my past experience, if you have scratches longer than 1'' or so, and more than 2 on a single panel, you are in trouble. Just read the return instructions the manufacturer would send you about a month to the lease end.

Hence the "up to an extent" part.

So I'm not exactly sure how the lease wear and tear works but from my experience returning a 228 lease without the coverage

First if you're getting a new car with the deal you are returning your lease to, the salesman will probably help you out and get some of the repair and wear and tear charges thrown out.

When i turned it my car, i had a chip in the windshield that i got sealed so there was no structural damage but of course the fix was pretty noticeable. When i returned it they noted that was a required replacement and were looking to charge me $600 for it but I asked my salesman if anything could be done and he was able to get taht taken off. So had i known, i would have just opted for a windshield replacement but then again i wonder if I wouldve needed an OEM replacement or what the standard is but i'm sure you can figure that out somewhere.

Also the fog lights are pretty easy to replace yourself. I cracked my fog and i was able to find a replacement housing for under $100 and it took maybe 15 mins to swap (not particularly handy either).

The minor scratches shouldn't be an issue i dont think.

So not sure if your excess wear insurance covers the fog and windshield but if not i would def fix it because they'll charge you for it.

Better not to correlate a new lease with past damages. You are going to pay for it anyway, through getting less discounts on the new deal.

They didn’t seem too crazy when buying a new car, not sure how it would be if you we’re walking.

not correlate but just the fact that after i returned my lease and also walked away with a new finance i got hit with the end of lease repair bill. i emailed my saleman to see what he could do about it and he got it waived. nothing set in stone but im sure if i didnt just buy a car from him i would have no one to ask to look into it.

That’s why I’m somewhat relieved that I got the excess wear and tear protection. Paid almost $1.9k for it and covers me up to $5k. They will prolly replace the windshield (3-4 chips/cracks from rock damage/driving in the snow in Tahoe), both fog lights are cracked, and the usual wear and tear stuff.
Although I’ve read that most ppl decline any coverage offered at the finance office. I’ll prolly also decline in my upcoming second lease.
Talked briefly with CS at FS and she stated ppl usually get dinged at least a few hundred to $1.2k max at end on lease inspection.

I've leased 6-7 BMWs and the only charge I ever got was for excess tire wear and it was about $200.

I've leased 5 BMWs in the past 7 years. I've only been hit with excess miles and never for damage. IMHO it's basically betting that you are going to have lots of damage to the car.

^^^ Why don't you guys share how much damage there was on your returned leases? I am a very careful person that normally you would find my car parked all the way in the back of an empty parking lot. For my cars, one scratch in an obvious spot is too much.

I think I’ll decline excess wear and tear on my upcoming second lease. This was my first time leasing - you live and learn. Even my car salesman said “they’re not petty” when it comes to the end of lease inspection.
For my next lease, im thinking of an x4 or mb glc. I didnt realize that the service maintenance is not included on mb leases. Yikes. Kinda makes a bmw lease for favorable.

If you are talking about leases, it doesn't matter. I know plenty of people who did no maintenance whatsoever on their leases.

They dinged me for my windshield $600, 2 fog lights $140, 2 tires $600, scratch in the rear bumper $400. It was just a pre inspection. I'm sure if I had these fixed on my own, it will cost less than half of what the total is. But I got excess wear and tear that covers me up to $5k - I paid for almost $2k (over priced, I know). Live and learn.

The issues arise when they can deny a warranty claim because the owner failed to do proper documented maintenance. Given that BMW offers free maintenance, it's just smarter to go ahead and do it. The additional maintenance plan, which I mistakenly took because I tend to eat through brakes, is unnecessary.

I was responding to MB including no free service vs BMW. I can see why people who lease don't bother with maintenance, this is also why I buy only new cars. Think about it, it's really not much could go wrong on a brand new car in 3 years. So long as it's not the engine broken, there's nothing else can be rejected on the ground of insufficient maintenance. And the worst 3 year old synthetic oil can probably do is to cause excessive wear and tear to the engine which may starts burning oil, but I don't think any lease owner would care.
