BMW Maintenance Costs

Hey All,

Really love my 2020 X2, it's my first BMW so some prices to maintain her have caught me off guard. It's a lease so oil changes are covered and she's under warranty so that helps but I am concerned about keeping her after 35K miles (if I decide to buy out the lease, which makes sense these days) . I guess my main concern is brake pads. This car eats thru a set/pair in a year. They last about 15K and then its $650 to replace 2 pads only. And I am not a mechanical type, so no I won't do them myself. What are you guys doing in regards to service on your X2??
I don't even want to think about how much the dealer will charge me for an oil change in about 5k miles...
Thanks in advance!

Wow, 15k? my '19 X2 M35i made it to about 26k before needed the front pads replaced. Thankfully it was covered. I haven't paid for any maintenance yet, but my next oil change won't be free. I'm guessing the dealership would probably charge $100. So I'll change it myself. You'll have to price job dealerships and indy shops if you're not going to do them yourself.
BMW has really made these cars simple to do most of your own maintenance. This is my fourth bmw and I've been doing my own maintenance for years. I really hate the cabin filters on these things but that's probably because I'm old and can't contort as well anymore since they put them in a stupid place on these cars.
I'm coming up on 36k so it's time for an oil change soon. FCP Euro, here I come for some free oil. lol

Performance cars have soft pads that work great at stopping things fast but also typically wear fast. It's common on all these cars, AMG Mercs, etc. Kinda like sticky tires wear fast but perform great while they have tread life left on 'em.

Change out the brake pads for some aftermarket ones of the type that will wear far less than what came on the car. In my experience with BMWs I've owned, each one came with 1 end that had super soft pads on it. On my X5 it was the fronts, on my X2 it's the rear pads. A simple swap for a different type of pads totally remedied the offending quick-wear pad set & eliminated the horridly thick/quick break dust issues on those wheels.

Brake pads are super easy to change out. I do my own but if you can't do them yourself think about soliciting help from someone in the BMW circles in your area (like from a bmw FB group near you). There are a bunch of guys in the Vegas BMW enthusiast circles that do stuff like this for people, being you're in SoCal I suspect there's WAY more people around there doing the same. Failing that, any indy car repair shop can swap them out for you for FAR less than the dealer. $650 to change out a pair of pads is straight up rape. For $100 in parts & 2 hours of my time (including prep & putting shit away) I can do something like that in my own garage.

I find that much of the exorbitant cost of owning German cars (at least before they're really old) is B.S. stuff you don't need to do or you can have done at Indy shops for a fraction of the cost.

Bottom line: Look for help with your wants/needs around your area that are outside of the walls of the dealership.

Just got quoted last week for an oil change in Canada, $213 + Tax. LOL

Have always done my own oil changes and will continue to do so. As i'm out of warranty now, will be researching local independent garages that specializes in import cars for anything that crops up that i cant do.

The single most important thing about owning any BMW out of warranty and for a long period of time is to stay away from BMW dealers.

Their prices are absolutely insane for routine maintenance items like brakes, etc. Find yourself a reputable independent mechanic. They don't even have to be BMW specialists. A good knowledgeable independent garage will have all the necessary tools and information at their disposal to tackle any repair or maintenance that might need to be done.

Source: I owned my last BMW (E92) for 12 years and put 120k miles on it. My independent, non-BMW mechanic was able to get everything done and diagnosed for me no problem at often times 1/4 the prices of the dealer.

I agree, I found one that has great reviews and BMW owners swear by. So I am feeling better about buying out this lease and keeping her until at least 65K. I love the X2 and won't find another deal on a BMW anytime soon, those days are OVER.
