The Aisin 8 speed transmission in the X1 2.8 in Canada is silky smooth. I tried the ZF in the 2017 3 series and it's about the same. Many of the newer BMW's will come equipped with the new AISIN 8 speed. It has a sport mode too and the shifts are smooth and quick. The X1 is front wheel drive biased in the x-drive. Whereas the other models are rear wheel drive biased. The new North American version of the X1 has the ULEV engine which was co-developed with Toyota. THe new 2, 3, 4 and even the 5 as well as the X1, X2 and X3, Mini Clubman and Mini Countryman will have this same engine & transmission. That's quite literally the best in class out there. I've been getting at least 35 - 38 MPG on the highway at 120 km/h. Amazing for a vehicle this size. I'm located in Montreal. Also I added a BMS Cold Air Intake. I'm contemplating the stage one ECU / Motor software upgrade. This brings the HP to over 300HP and the TQ over 300 too. It literally flies in Sport Mode from what others have told me.

Am I correct that the Aisin f48 8speed box is also controlled via GPS to ensure the correct ratio is use for the road ahead? Has anyone got a write up on the subject please?

I have seen the statement somewhere. If I find it, I will post the link. I remember seeing it on a Youtube video.

As to the Aisin 8 AT, unless this has been a recent upgrade in 2020 builds, then I'd say not. That said, the transmission is relatively 'smart' and does quite a reasonable job selecting ratios for road conditions when left in 'auto' — especially with 'Sport' selected on the EDC. We just did a 6 day trip covering almost 1000km over hilly, twisty and quite rough roads, and I found the X1 quite decent to drive — just the odd intervention for a little more engine braking, or to set up for a quick overtake.

That article is just rubbish. I have the 2020 build X1 and is has the Aisin box.
But to be fair. I also had a F30 335i with the ZF box and I think the Aisin in my X1 is on par or even better shifting than my old F30.

I think the ZF8AT on my F20 M135i is a tad better than the Aisin — especially in 'Sport' — it shifts fast AND smoothly

I think the dealer misspoke (Trumpism... Sorry) when I asked him yesterday about the transmission on my 2020 LCI X1 xDrive 2.0i M Sport. Anyway, my car is due to be unloaded from the ship today or tomorrow and should be with the dealer in 6 days on Wednesday 30th. Naturally, I will be able to check the details then.

Yeah, the ZF is probably a bit quicker then the Aisin, but by a very small margin. Still ,the Aisin is a very good gearbox. |

Try these paragraphs from the technical manual.....It depends on how you read them.

I haven't driven the horizontal ZF 8 speed, but I'd agree that compared to the F40 ZF and Aisin in the X1, there is very little to choose between them. |

I saw this in a print magazine about 9 months ago in Asia-it was about the new 2 series 2020, which was going to use the same new ZF transmission. I haven't actually crawled under a 2020 car to confirm this is the case, though!

"The new 8-speed automatic transmission can be installed in almost all vehicle classes with a front-longitudinal drive configuration." So not the current generation of MINI/BMW FWD/AWD cars, and production of that (longitudinal) transmission will reach 2022 cars. Regrettably, motoring journalists are just as likely as all journalists to get facts wrong. No mistake, though — I'd love to see ZF produce a transverse AT — just to eliminate the jerky Getrag DCTs that are proliferating

Manual says that US cars still use the Aisin gearbox. ZFs will most likely hit the next generation X1s. |

New 2020 X1's in Canada get the Aisin 8AT, but they get the electronic shifter design that was designed by ZF and common in other BMW's over the past few generations.
ZF style shifter, Aisin 8AT transmission. |
