In this case this car looks 100% Korean. Bmws strength has been to bring its core values to a segment.

When the first x5 was introduced it eventually won people over because it was an SUV that was actually fun to drive. BMW core values in a new segment.
With this car if you took away the roundels and kidneys I don't think anyone would think many would consider it a bmw.

So the tables are turned. It's not bmw bringing its values to a new segment. It's bmw copying other cars in a segment to make $$. If that's right or wrong is a totally different discussion.

But looking at this x2 in isolation. It's the most amount of dilution ie "selling out" we have yet seen. I can't think of any lower bar for dilution off the top of my head at this point.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. I desperately want to be wrong.
I'm having a hard time finding an argument to these points. I get what you're saying. It's not that everyone doesn't want BMW building SUVs, it's that this particular SUV doesn't look particularly BMW-like.

I keep looking over the images, and only the profile strikes me as BMW. The front... Oy. I'm not even sure what to say. I think we've reached peak air-scoop. That's about all I can think of when I look at the front of this thing. It's like the aero from the M2 turned up to 11. No, I take that back. It's like the M2 aero turned up to 14.
Exactly. If you closed your eyes and I told you:

Hey there's this new awesome car. It has a lot of big scoops and vents which are non functional and multi colored body panels which have a plasticky look to them.

Would your mind goto bmw at first ? I hope not. Maybee. But to me im thinking of a Kia or a civic.

Then continue the conversation

... And it's front wheel drive with a transverse mounted 4 cylinder engine.

I do think bmw went for this angle on purpose so that's where I see it as the absolute bottom barrel of brand dilution

I bet it will be a tuned 4 cyl engine, because recently the number designation has only had meaning in terms of performance, not displacement or number of cylinders.

BMW can call a 350BHP 4 cyl an M35i because it performs like one, and because the 6cyl stuff will be called 40i or even 45i by then.

Either that or they are secretly developing a V6 engine. Because there is no way a transverse I6 will fit in the X1 engine bay. No way at all.

I like it, except for the lower rear end. My X1 is surprisingly fun for a grocery getter. Put a bigger engine in the X2 and I'm on board.

That concept care has that freaky jaguar look to it

Whats up with the rocker panels...is it just paint or is an integrated flipper step?

Whatever it is...its fugly.....

The front end is ok but all I can think of is how difficult its going to be to wash/wax it

I actually like the back end but not sure why they bothered to put a hatch on it if its 4.5' off the ground....its effectively unusable

I get that its a concept care but if they're going to target grocery getters then its got to be somewhat practical

There should be only one letter associated to bmw models. And it's not an X, nor an i, nor a d.

B48 is their modular 4-cylinder engine. It is used in the new 230i and 330i vehicles. If they can tune it an use it in a transverse setup then I think that would be strong. Still prefer the I6 days of old, but if they can get 290-300hp then I think it could still be fun in an xDrive setup for those of us that live in snow.

Look at the spy shots of camouflaged prototypes, there is one shot of the open boot... the load lip is a lot lower on the production car! Which is good because as you rightly say a lip that's too high (X4/X6) is pretty useless... especially for Denzel my spaniel

He's thinking of the letter M.

This type of consumer demand is why BMW is quickly moving toward a lineup where nearly every single model has to have a M in the name, or at least an M option package.

Side profile isn't bad...definitely needs a drop and bigger wheels. Back end reminds me of a Japanese car that I can't place...funky design but wondering how this fits into the overall lineup.

EDIT - no interior photos?

I really like it. We have a 15 X1 right now and I'm not a fan of the newer X1. This could be an upgrade path though.

If the X2 is not your thing.
Then there will be a MINI Countryman Coupe which will be shown as a concept next year. It takes its cues from the MINI PACEMAN but adds five drs for extra practicality.

Nailed it!

We've already seen the I6 based cars move to 40i nomenclature. I think it's a good bet that any future 35i designated cars will be a B48 based I4. I see the designations lining up something like this:

20i - I4 output class K (see alt below)
20i - I3 output class O (alternate possibility)
28i - I4 output class M/O
35i - I4 output class O/T
40i - I6 output class M/O
M40i - I6 output class T

Output class is the 7th character of a BMW engine code. For example, the X3 M40i uses engine code N55B20T0, where "T" is the output class.

Turner BMW engine code reference.

As a German, I can tell you we love minimalism and a clean design. Germans love a sleeper that doesn't give off its hand right away.
This vehicle looks cheap and loud like an attention seeking girl at a club with 10lbs of make up on and sequins and glitter all over.
This design speaks to me. I like the design language and proportions.

I like it overall, and wish a production car could have door shut lines that tight. Hell, with shut lines like that we could have ugly Bangle-butts, lines across the hood like so many of the FXX cars, and so on!
