225/40R20 to 235/40/R20 tires...

I'm mulling over the aforementioned tire changes on my M35i.

Because A) the runflats are a bitch, and B) ...see A.

I ran the change thru this tire calculator.

https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc...0r20-235-40r20

Difference in speedo etc seems negligible. Anyone here swap out their RFT's yet? 225/40R20 to 235/40/R20s? Would going slightly wider be an issue on this particular vehicle?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

I swapped out the runflats for both the winter and summer sets. I stayed with 19s in stock width. You will notice a better ride and better traction, if you are getting summer rubber...not bad side effects.

That's the thing, I've yet to find any tires in the OEM 20" setup beyond the Pirelli runflats...these damn Goodyears aren't even out to the public yet. Frickin' GOODYEAR doesn't have them.

3 available options in 235/40/R20 including Pilot Sport A/S 3+ and Pilot Sport 4s. There's a third option, but who cares?

Stock wheel diameter is 8" (for the 19s) so you can actually go as wide as 245 without a problem. I do worry about overall weight, but that's a different story. Keep us apprised of your plans on the car

Thanks very much, truly appreciate your input. Incidentally I managed to get a ton of research done yesterday so 235/40/20 will have a negligible effect on the speedo while 235/35/20 will likely match, so those will be my targets.

I'm not even sure how these Goodyears perform...I haven't the slightest idea why they put them on over the PZero's but I'm in the break-in period so I can't really even push the damn thing yet to get a sense of near-limit performance. PZ's were on my old X1 35i, which had the Msport suspension...run flats, sure but the ride was acceptable on 19's. On the 20's these things are ridiculous. However my wife has NOT complained, so I got that going for me, which is nice.

spare tire

For those who have replaced their run flats, have you added a spare tire and jack kit?

There is a thread in the X1 forum.. in order to get a spare tire safely mounted you will need to figure out the hardware/screw and modification needed to hold it down. After that you need to find the right sized spare that would fit over our M brakes and match the tire size. Getting a jack kit is super easy (harbor freight sells a scissor jack almost the same). When I switch to regular tires I will probably just forget it, since I will mostly be within 100 miles of my own home and have AAA towing. Also to note, BMW's come with road side towing for the first 3-4 years anyways.
