BMW X1 feeling every bump
I recently purchased a CPO 2018 X1 with low 20k miles.
I haven't driven the x1 before and I have heard that the drive is a bit firm, but I really feel every single bump on the road (big or small). I don't hear any clunk noise and I get that the RFT make extra noise but I wonder if there is any issue with my suspension and/or damper. I recently drove a 2020 X1 loaner and I didn't experience the same degree of issue when driving over the same roads with the bumps on the road. Any ideas or recommendations on areas to look for? |

The more flex in the tyre wall = softer ride. The smaller the wheel diameter = softer ride. Standard tyres (NOT Run Flats) = softer ride. I have adaptive dampers and there is little difference in ride harshness compared to the standard setup. The adaptive when set to Sport just gives less bounce and less lean when cornering. That is my experience as I have them on my LCI X1 xDrive 2.0i M Sport. Worth noting. The ride height of the M Sport with adaptive is 10 mm higher than the M Sport specified without adaptive. UK specified cars now come with standard tyres NOT Run Flats. Most likely because of the harshness of Run Flat Tyres.

Accept what you say re cost etc but, as I've mentioned in another post, I've very recently changed all round from the factory fit Bridgestone Turanza T001 tyres (worn down to 3mm) to non-RFT Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance 2. These aren't BMW * marked, but are highly rated in reviews, including for longer distance wear time. The difference in ride quality on our awful UK road surfaces is quite surprising and they are quieter too. Unlike the Bridgestones, they also have rim protection built in to the sidewalls. So far I'm very impressed and shows it proves worthwhile to look around when the inevitable time to change does come round!

Good point. I found with my rfts that a pound or two extra not only gave me a better ride but it also increased their life on the car.
