BMW 25d £10000+ vat repair bill

Hi all
This is to make people aware of the cost to repair a BMW X1 25d M sport 2016, with 59000 miles BMWFSH. I am the original driver although as such it’s had 2 owners, me via lease company and me as a private bought ownerBelow is how the story begins.

October 2020 DVSA Recall EGR COOLER, this was carried out on my car and returned to me, no mention of the 2nd EGR to be fitted being clogged or unserviceable on 54500 miles.

June 2021
Vehicle breaks down and is towed into BMW Main Dealer. Only 2 faults showing on roadside diagnostics Is EGR partial and EGR not opening. I agree to pay for a scope and fit a new EGR around £500.

End of August 2021
I wasn’t getting anywhere with the dealer, so I decided to wander in and ask over the counter, the man was apologetic and my car was just sat in the back car park, in a mess.He then promised me a manager would sort this, and to be honest she has done much better, however see below. So far this doesn’t fix the issue, I am told over the counter it’s roughly Total £6500+vat(£7800).

3rd Sept 2021
Now what follows may astound people. Then we have the cylinder head off, all injectors out, DPF/Cat off. Injectors tested show 1 is massive overfuel, other 3 over values. DPF is shot,Cat is shot, EGR is shot and EGR cooler shot, and finally inlet manifold shot.

Dealer went to BMW UK GOODWILL
Apparently
No discount on labour
15% on parts
But now the bill is £10000+vat(12000) so basically I am told to stump up £7000+ vat(£8400)

This is a astonishing, a just 5 year old vehicle with full service history via BMW and less than 60000 miles.
I’m then told to ask to ring BMW UK CUSTOMER SERIVCE to see if they can do any more.

I’m still getting over this and haven’t decided on anything, but if this is goodwill from £500 to £10000 I’m blown away. What kind of engine is in this thing.

I am a plant fitter of big machinery(Diggers etc)Now I have a theory that the EGR COOLER that was fitted by them may have leaked the glycol and damaged all sorts or most of these parts they quote as it’s a domino effect.

Any thoughts etc ? Opinions ? This is astounding, so anyone thinking of buying anything, sit tight at the mo unless you really want one of these desirable German machines with so called unbreakable mechanics. I mean I’m not even sure the dealer hasn’t done something to my car in repairing this? I mean does this take 2.2 months to come to this conclusion ?

I will not name the dealer as yet but if it was your school report it would say could do better.

As for BMW well…no comment.

Im feel for you mate. I own a VERY similar car to yours, 2016, FBMWSH, two previous owners, 56k mls, but mine is 2.0D Xdrive
I own it for a month only and got the transmission error. Its a big job but in comparison to yours its nothing.
If I was you I would seek legal advice and see if you can prove that they are at fault. 12k is not far away from what would you pay for another X1.
PS: was there an EGR recall for X1? I might call BMW and see if it was done on mine
Fingers crossed to get it sorted your way!!

Hi, yes there was a EGR cooler recall on over 250000 uk diesel owned BMW of all series. You can check them or go to the online mot checker of the dvla and put the reg number in and at the bottom will tell you if your car has had the recall done. Well I feel for you too, check drivetrain error is what I got on the dashboard but since then it has morphed into this nightmare. Retailing values have gone up so dealers want £20k-£22k for mine but it’s £48k new and not even worn in to be worn out. Never ragged just normally used. Up until then not an issue until it had this recall done and 7 months and 4500 miles later…this happens.

I’m taking advice at present as this is shocking. Premium brand….I’m not so convinced now. Customer service…really not sure now either.

So you didn't think of taking out the extended warranty after the 3-year manufacturer's warranty had expired?
Premium brand = Premium prices for everything.

Personally, I would never contemplate owning/driving a new car these days after the 3-year manufacturer's warranty without considering the possibility of a large breakdown bill. I would always consider putting money away for repairs or having the BMW comprehensive extended warranty.

I just checked the gov website and there is no oitstanding safety recall found. I checked the BMW website too but found the same so I guess mi e doesnt need one or it has been done but I wont know unless I call BMW directly to check their records.
Good luck with your car mate and keep us posted!

Ironically this example of poor BMW quality and poor customer service has prompted me to give them more of my money for an extended warranty!

Hi, I was gonna change out in Sept this year, car has been faultless except for 2 EGR valves and this EGR Cooler, to top it all my car is just abandoned in car park, disc brakes are rusted, instead of a wheel chock they have used a rusted old brake disc, unwashed, no battery, unlocked, and to top it all the car has been hit on the lower front wing causing a scrape. I can’t see for dust and dirt the rest of it, but this is 2.5 months of sitting around. I am gonna pay for one of the best I dependant engineers who specialises in this area, this could as I pointed out to them today become quite embarrassing for them, I mean I expect to pay some money out, yes of course, but between £7000-£10000, I think BMW has lost the plot here. I am still adamant that after the EGR COOLER was done under recall that this has been the catalyst to this epic mechanical failure of 5/6 components. I mean I have heard now of even the recalls replacement didn’t go that well. 250000+ recalls and a dvsa recall can’t hardly mean it went unnoticed.I am still in shock and more so now I seen my car in the car park, I think it would be treated better in a scrap yard.

Hi all
Update…as of yesterday, having now had a super in-depth with the workshop manager and workshop controller, they found some information that will be passed back to BMW for further analysis. At the moment they are kind of swayed that the mechanical fault was caused by….well they wouldn’t say at present however they have been more honest about the approach that’s all I can say. I am still in discussion and will update periodically. 3 months and counting.
