I think so also ...

wish I never took it in to them now but they wouldn't confirm anything till they did diagnostics - which I guess I will have to pay for regardless.

Really disappointing service from BMW over what seems to be a common issue.
thats true. There should have been a recall. Thankfully though we have this forum and we can help each other.

Same problem with Transmission error on my X1 F48 from 2016. I went to BMW service and they told me that I need to change complete shifter which is of course coming with high price…

Any updates on how the goodwill would work? I am a lady and have no idea how to do all this handy repair. I went to the service center today with the same error and quoted me $2500 to replace the gear shifter and $260 for diagnostic fee. On top of that they also said one of the motor mount had broke, another $1600. 2017 X1 xdrive 44k miles. Is this normal?

Updated: Just found out USA have no good will… will a complaint work?

I have this same exact issue both gear shifter and engine mount. 2017 X1, 62k miles. No goodwill replacement, only $200 off repair. Submitted my complaint to NHTSA before taking to dealer.

Question fixed the broken spring but still have same error message

On the third tear down I decided to install the old spring as others have here. I couldn't tell much difference looking at them but I made a few observations. The metal shaft isn't held in well on the circuit board side. It will click into place on the other side but just mush into place on the circuit board side. I think this may be causing the shaft to lift a little when the spring is tense and limiting the range of the arm. I've become quite proficient at this process and have disassembly down under an hour and assembly just over 90 minutes. It's not that bad of a process, so don't fear it.

With the old spring installed the system seems to be working correctly. I think my new spring is not quite like the old and adding to the issue above, it just wont work. I'm happy to see the old spring work, but I think with the next failure I'll just order a new shifter.
Hi Brewstation, I'm about to go through the same journey as you did. 2nd try~ you mentioned that the plastic arm with a small magnet can go all the way up passing the magnet detecting device on the circuit board. For mine, if I press lightly, I will go up and then go down when I stop pressing it. If I press the arm all the way down, the arm seems to get stuck and won't come back by itself. -- Should it come back freely when I press it all the way down?

BMW Shift Lever 420106

Having searched the internet, I can see that the 420106 Gear Shift issue is pretty widespread. This is a factory-caused defect and BMW should be recalling the cars. I'm in the US and have filed a complaint with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration). They have already received complaints about this and the more they get, the more likely it will be that they will force a recall. If you reside in the US and are experiencing this issue, please contact the NHTSA and file a complaint by visiting their website at https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls or calling them at 888-327-4236. They are nice to work with and filing a complaint will only take a few minutes.

It seems this problem is common on BMW X2 and Mini Cooper as well but no one is giving a solution. I think the fault is inside the shift so might replace the shift and see if anything changes. I’m not sure of the prices though. Because the issue is not actually affecting the cars use, I will hold on for awhile. Maybe someone will find a way soon but will keep looking.. Anyone else? Honest John has someone reporting same issue on f46 2 series GT

Hi mate,

this a common problem on F46 and the minis too. Not just F48. I have done the repair an all three by now and must say the X1 is the hardest in terms of amount of screws and connectors ease release.
Good luck and I'm here if you need help.

Well, I figured I’d get this error at some point, almost 50k miles on the dot and here we go. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread, I knew exactly what it was when the problem presented and didn’t freak out.

Warranty has been extremely unresponsive, assuming it stays that way I’ll just tackle the issue myself. The only thing I’m unclear on is whether I should buy a new spring for $10-20 or just follow the video guide and unwind the current spring one revolution. Seems like both solutions work. It’ll probably be a few weeks until I get around to it, heading to the Pikes Peak Hillclimb soon, but I’ll report back with how it goes!

Imo the major cost of the job is actually removing and taking the unit apart, therefore I think fitting a new spring is most sensible option. If metal fatigue is causing failure then the spring will be even weaker when unwound a loop and unless you are looking to get rid of the car within a few months it is asking for a repeat. Hope the job goes easily.
