Turbo lag? (non M35i engines)

Have any other non-M35i petrol 2.0 turbo owners noticed bad turbo lag in some situations? either X1 or X2 with the 7 speed DSG?

I have found that when the engine's hot (regardless of outside temperature), the turbo lag from standstill, or when needing acceleration after cruising at a fixed speed, can be really bad. Once the car's underway (say after 0.5 to 1 second), then there's strong acceleration.

This doesn't seem consistent, because at other times the responsiveness can be really good (esp when the engine's cold). That's why I don't think there's a hardware issue...

I'm using the BMS pedal tuner, which improves throttle response in many situations, but doesn't help with the above situations.

I've also tried in manual mode ensuring that 1st gear is selected, to see if it's an issue with transmission lag. The lag is exactly the same.

Wondering whether it's worth booking it into the dealer to see if there's a software update...or whether they'll just keep it for a day and waste my time.

Before I do that could other (non M35i) drivers let me know their experiences please...

thank you

(* non M35i because the M35i's engine and gearbox are totally different )

My wife has an X2 with the petrol 2.0 litre engine. I drive it a fair bit and haven't noticed any lag even on hot days in Perth. Might be worth a trip to the dealer to see if you can re-produce the isssue...

Hi Guthrie
How's it going in my old hometown of Perth?
Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like I should take it in to the dealer...at the same time I get my windscreen replaced!

Considering the engine is not exactly highly tuned from factory (only 141kW which is not much these days)....the lag is surprisingly bad. Much worse than any turbo 4 cylinder I've had before (even early WRXs)...

Out of curiosity, what colour did you go with? Mine's Mineral Grey (non X).

In Canberra I've seen every colour on the road except that metallic olive colour.
Maybe a few more Misano Blues than any other.

cheers

The M35i has the same issue. Doesn’t really feel the power kick in until several seconds after flooring it. No instant acceleration.

I think that delayed acceleration is more the transmission than the engine. I have a 228i M Sport with the 2.0 liter and ZF transmission and it has no lag at all. My wife has the X1 2.8 with essentially the same engine but the Aisin transmission, and the response is very different. Distinct lag from standing start or moving start.

The dealership had my car for a day, and reported that the lag was 'normal'. I don't understand how lag so bad/unpredictable can be considered safe or normal..

They said there was no boost loss reported nor any other faults.

Anyway I'm stuck with it.

Ha! It's not bloody normal...for a luxury performance car to function in this manner.
