I work for R&D Continental, I can explain to you at length why all RF tires will puncture more easily, but let's stick to the easy "explain like you're 5" - an 18" wheel with optimal air pressure is "touching" the ground with about as much space as a soccer ball. Now, if you put your foot down on such ball, it will deform and the space in direct contact with the ground could easily quadruple for a fraction of second.
Basically the same thing happens with a tire if you hit a pothole. With a runflat tire, because of reinforced sidewall (normal tires have usually 5 to 7 rather thin wires used as reinforcement, RFT have a very complicated metal form that you wouldn't be able to deform with your own body weight. If a RFT tire hits a pothole, you have a fraction of space to "spring" the sudden pressure, so if normal tire can basically use about a third of the tire to bend and compress, you have 20% of that with an RFT, the pressure on the material is significantly higher, and the reinforced sidewall itself if damaged can cause a tear, internally, you could not even notice the tire is damaged. RFT, and especially tires over 18" are referred in rubber business as "printing money" tires, but nobody, absolutely nobody who understands what RFTs really are is putting RFT on their car. You can praise them all you want, but they simply are a very expensive piece of equipment that is not worth the extra. |

Has anyone added the spare tire kit/tools to a RFT car? If so, where dido you buy the parts? Do you have a list of part numbers?
I would like to add a spare since we do many long distance runs and don't want to be out of range for the RFT or be concerned if the closest shop has the tire in-stock. |

I've added the spare. I simply purchased the space saver rim from a dealer and then bought the relevant tyre from tire rack.com. The other bits -- a wheel lug wrench and scissor jack I purchased from an auto parts store. Everything is tied down in the underfloor along with other bits and pieces. All up cost...around $250.

Pretty much in-line with these guys once you ship it. https://www.getbmwparts.com/partloca...catalogid=4462 I think I can buy the tire/wheel for $250/shipped and then just come up with the other pieces locally. I bet I can find a way to tie it down. |

I purchased from Tirerack.com a Kumho Spare T121 size T135/90R17 to suit. The original wheel lug bolts can be used. I then purchased a generic scissor jack (2000Kg) from an autoparts store, along with a generic lug nut wrench. This is the only spare wheel BMW sells for the X1, AFAIK. The wheel and tyre combination (135/90x17" has *approximately* the same rolling diameter as 225/55x17", 225/50x18" and 225/45x19", which are the X1 wheel size options.

For those who purchased the spare tire/wheel, how did you hold it down in the compartment? I have one but haven't fastened it down yet.

You could remove the lining and see if just a small home in the right place would expose the screw point The bracket ( no 8 in the picture above) is also required for a secure fit

I'm getting the 19" wheels and they come with RFT which I'll change out when worn to non-RFT. So I'm thinking I should order the Space Saver spare as factory build then store or just use for some journeys. Question is when jack and wheel are removed do you get left with a nice flat under floor space ? Thanks.

https://parts.bmwnorthwest.com/a/BMW...1_0828.html#01 I ordered the actual wheel from Bimmerzone because they ship a pre-mounted wheel/tire combo. In terms of the install, all it took was removing the little tool holder in the front of the storage compartment and replacing it with the little metal L-bracket that holds the spare down. This requires cutting a little slit in the liner but isn't tough. I got the separate foam block for the jack as well, though it looks like there may be a spot for the jack in the tray that goes inside the wheel too. |
