2016 BMW X1 Oil Type

As my car is now out of the free service period, I am going to go to my local Goodyear mechanic to change the oil/oil filter on the car.

Does anyone know what type of oil they should use? I am confident they know but I would rather have the information going in.

Thanks

Take a look at Pennzoil Ultra European...I believe they are the maker of BMW's OEM oil...It's made from Natural Gas instead of crude oil...and supposedly produces less volatile contamination during use..big issue with direct injection engines like all current BMW's is the PCV system "cruding up' the intake valves over time. less contamination coming off the hot oil should help cut that down.
I'd buy my own oil and bring a good filter (Mahle or OEM) and find a shop willing to just charge labor...then you know you haven't ended up with substandard materials.
Also...giving them a 5 quart jug means you're not going to get an overfilled crankcase (read about oil overfill warnings in owners manual)!
BMW's "thoughtful" design of the electronic "dipstick" system leaves us with no way to know if someone dumps in too much oil!

Check owner's manual for more information. You'll need the correct viscosity AND type. For my 2018 X1, it states the oil type should meet "BMW Longlife-01 FE or BMW Longlife-14 FE+" spec.

Also, in terms of the filter, I got BMW OEM one for my first change, but realized BMW sources their filters from Mahle. If it's cheaper, get the Mahle branded one. Just make sure the part number cross references to the correct BMW part #.

Shell is actually the supplier to BMW for the motor oil. Before that it was Castrol.

0W20 is way to thin especially for a turbo. Saving gas at the expense of engine wear. I would get at least 0W30.

I work in a parts department for a BMW dealer and 0w20 oil is what is used.

That 0w-20 is what they use for getting max MPG for EPA sticker...look in owners' manual...I have used 0W-40 in all my vehicles. I worked with some good polymer chemists and they told me multigrade oils gradually lose the upper viscosity over time...I'd rather have better hot weather lubrication, winter starting isn't an issue since my vehicles are garaged and not left outside long enough for oil to get seriously cold in our climate (daytime temps usually in 30-40's...).

The official list of approved lubricants is in the TIS. Here is a link:

3.1 Technically suitable engine oils for petrol engines:.

As you can see, in addition to 0W20, you can put 0W30 oil in the B46 engine, as well as 5W30. My dealership puts 0W30 in these engines.

The engines were designed 0W20 / 0W30. The reason BMW chose such light oils is most likely fuel economy. BMW is not alone doing this. When I changed the oil myself, I put in 0W30, because it's allowed. I would not recommend putting in a weight that's not on the approved list.

If it doesn't meet BMW Longlife-01 FE, BMW Longlife-14 FE+ or any of the ones that bimmerdriver2 provided in the link, I wouldn't use it. That link has all the viscosities and compatible specs with our car (B46 engine).

I use the pennzoil 5w30 platinum since it's usually available at Walmart at a great price.
No problem in 30k miles, the car is a daily grocery getter. It's going to be fine.
