Exterior Bulb Replacement with LED

Anyone tried replacing the Bulb to LED without coding ?

The manual suggests:

Front Turn Signal:
Bulb: A2357 / 21W
Socket: PY21W -> Is it same as BAU15S?

Turn Signal / Outer and Inner Break Light:
Bulb: P21WLL / 21W
Socket: Is it BA15S?

Fog Light: H8 / 35w
This is not a concern.

You can change them but you will require coding for changing any halogen bulb to LED. The cars computer does error checks both "warm" and "cold" they're called and they have to be disabled once you switch otherwise you will have constant errors. If your in the tri state area, I can do it for you or if you purchase the cable I can do it remotely. Takes 2 seconds. If you search my threads, I did the Philips Xtremevision LED fog light bulbs and I absolutely love them. Also did the Burger Tuning license plate, footwell, courtesy, trunk and glovebox. Unfortunately there's nothing available for the interior roof lights yet as their integrated LEDs on circuit boards. A buddy of mine did the turning signals, reverse and brake lights LED. They look great. If your gonna do the fogs I would definitely recommend the Philips, for a led bulb in a halogen housing the projection is crazy. No glare and the way it's designed, it's not a direct bright light when you look into the light so it doesn't hurt oncoming motorists or pedestrians when they look at it oncoming. For the bulb types, go on the sylvania website and put in the year, make and model. It will tell you every bulb type in the car.

I recently installed LEDs for the rear turn signals and back up lights. No error msg and no recoding necessary. Just plug-n-play. The only thing I noticed was that the LEDs would flicker on start up for about 5 sec. These LEDs were obtained from deAutoKey. I am awaiting the arrival of the front LEDs turn signals, as well as, the 4 LEDs brake lights. Will see if they produce any msg. My X1 is a 2017 if that makes any difference.

Some of them say error free but they in most cases aren't truly 100% error free. The flicker your experiencing are the checks, that's why they do that. You can code those out, super easy. Buy the cable off of Amazon for $20, download the software from the forums and you can code a ton of other nice things as well. It doesn't hurt anything though, it will just do that on start up and sometimes every so often while the car is on. Some people find it annoying, some don't care... to each his own.

Finally I got a solution...

Found something from AliExpress and changed my Front / Rear Signal bulbs. No error code / flicker etc so far - just plug-n-play.

Front Signal:

Greetings. I have asked both sellers but they are telling that leds are not canbus and additional resistors might be needed. Could you please one more time confirm that there are no any flickers after start up (first 5-7 seconds) and there are no errors on the dashboard after installation of the leds from the links above. Actually I also like full led and don't wanna have a headache with coding (In Ukraine it could be additional "questions" from dealer during the warranty period). Appreciate your help

Yea the I contacted the seller before and they're not able to confirm if the bulb has canbus / true compatible with F48 X1.

I just went ahead and ordered the Front signal & Rear Signal (same as break light). Installed the Front and try for 100km before installing the real signal. Confirmed that no flickers nor error code issue. I've driven that for 300-400km and no issue.

I just ordered another set of rear light. Gonna leave the inner break as I'm not confident to take off the panel on the trunk.

You may order the front signal first as shipping is free anyways!

Just to mention that I dunno the seller and no commission for me.

You can do it! Just slide the panel off with a flat blade from inside the lift gate and you will see the bulb that needs to be removed. If you can change a tire, you can do this. It's much easier than tire changing .

Oh, BTW, did you have to remove the transformer/heat sink of the LED headlights to access the turn signals in the front?

No need to remove the heat sink. You can just access directly. The manual even suggest to remove the windshield refiller tube but it's not required. Do the left hand side first as it's easier.

I'm looking for some informations and I just take a look on the X1's manual. I've extracted a page and attached here.

It seems that the inner brake lamps are H21WLL however you mentioned P21WLL. Is that correct ? Bulbs are quite differents, BA15S / BAY9S, i mean.

I tried with the front sidemarkers and they don't start blinking. Do they need to be coded first in order to be recognized by the car?

It should blink w/o coding. Perhaps you have a defective one? I ordered the same ones and they blink w/o problem. No hyperlinks, no error messages. I went ahead and code it for LEDs thereafter for reassurances.

My apologies, I only ordered the front turn signals. As for the rears, I had those from DeAutoKey prior to the front ones. They're the 1156 OSRAM CREE LEDs. The 1156 functioned well too, except for flickering on start up. Using Bimmercode, I coded the rears to LED, and now no more flickering.

They light if I put them as rear blinkers, with check control isssue, but they work. If I install them as front blinkers they don't light. Maybe It detects them as defective bulbs.
I tried coding front blinkers as led and I received an error message in esys when the coding process ended.

They are not the same led bulbs you are talking about these are not error free led bulbs
