Yes, Aftermarket MMI or OEM EVO Retrofit.

I just bought a 2018 BMW x1 and Carplay was not installed. I was told by the salesperson and the product specialist that I did not have the hardware to support Carplay. They said the only option was a 3rd party box that I would attach to my HU. I cam across this forum and saw reference to the entrynav versions. I checked my and saw that I had the entrynav2. I then came across https://bimmer-remote.com/ and they said that as long as I had the WLAN port then I could have Carplay on my system, and he would log in and check for free. Well, I was a little concerned about just letting anyone into my computer and car. I followed the reviews and checked out the review site and felt comfortable enough to give it a shot. I reached out to Jakob at bimmer-remote.com and he was able to set up a time the next morning. He logged in and confirmed I was good to go and then he sent me the payment link and started downloading to my computer. He was there all the time making sure I did everything right and answering all my questions. With download times we spend close to 2 hours, but in the end, I had Carplay working in the OEM setting and I didn't have to take anything apart on my dashboard. I would highly recommend Jakob to anyone interested in getting any coding done on your Bimmer. He was fantastic.

WLAN antenna while beneficial, is not a requirement. In most cases, CarPlay will work without it.

The WiFi signal is still present and broadcasted without the antenna, and the phone if relatively close to dash (e.g. in the cup holder) normally has no issue connecting to it.

Aaaa ok i knew this... but from experience i can tell you that not in all cases. It gives you “connection not succesfull “ even with the phone near the dashboard. After you plug the antenna “connection succesfull” without changing anything.

WLAN Antenna is really not needed in case of Entrynav2.
Carplay works good without it in this headunit. Just need WLAN port at the back. At least all activations done by me

Ok, but I still don't get it, what is the real utility of the wifi antenna if we can do most part of the times without it as you mentioned?
I mean, If you can do it without the antenna, afterwards, the antenna is useless or there is any other feature of the multimedia that uses wifi antenna?

It makes for an improved connection, which some cars need, but most don't, and it enhances the signal range for all, so that the phone can be a further distance from the head Unit. That's it.

For example, if I activate the apple car without the antenna, can I leave my cellphone wireless connected with the HU anywhere in the car or because of the absence of the wireless antenna, it must be near to the HU(eg. cup holder or sticked on the vent below the hu)?

No. Thats backwards. It's a Bluetooth handshake to establish connection that's then handed off to WiFi, so phone needs to remain close to head Unit.

If your worried about it, just and the Antenna wire. It's cheap and simple to do. Or try CarPlay first without one, and only add if you experience connection issues.

I used bimmer-remote.com this morning kubax86 and everything worked perfectly.

2018 X1 with entrynav2. Remoted in did the magic and everything worked like a charm. So happy to have CarPlay enabled. Touch and iDrive knob control everything and it's seamless. All for 30 mins of our time and less than a aliexpress MMI box that may or maynot work.
