I replaced both front and rear pads. Rotors are fine.
The front sensor was still good. I did not have time to replace the rear pads before the sensor kicked in. So I had to replace the rear sensor. |

Just did oil change for winter at 35k miles. Rear pads measure 5mm. Front pads are at 3.5mm. They were replaced 9k miles ago in March before my free maintenance expired (stealership did the pads and oil change then).
Can someone recommend an aftermarket pad for the M35i that will last longer? |

I have Akebono EUR 1880 in the front since last year (it required some work to make it fit).
I replaced the rear in spring this year with Powerstop Z23-2240. I think because they are ceramic, so they are not as grabby as oem when they are cold. After that, they are good. No noise and no dust. Oem pads make the rotors silver shiny. The Akebono make the rotor more brownish shiny. The PowerStop make the disc darker gray than oem. I was tempted by the Akebono EUR1762 for the rear... but I was not able to confirm that it will fit our M35i and because I did not want the trouble to try and return it, I went for the PowerStop. What made me doubt is the EUR1762 is listed on many sites as compatible with the X1 also. If anyone confirm that the EUR1762 fit the rear, I'll change it. I have the feelings the Akebono is better than Powerstop. |

Popping into this thread in case anyone finds some nice ceramics for the front. Just swapped my winter tires on, and it looks like spring will be the time to do my fronts. Rears look good. I'm at about 20k miles on my 2019 m35i. Thanks to the pandemic I've saved so many miles on the car, but it's back to Normal pace for me. I'll have to look up the brake swap instructions, looks like my Evo brembos , knock out two pins and call it a day. It seems that the pads should be more universal if they use these M calipers on other models.

Wow, so i'm still looking at Google part numbers. Akebono doesn't sell front pads .. but powerstop seems to sell them and they are dirt cheap at rock auto.. $22.79!
Powerstop z17 #171875 ceramic. I might just order them now so they are ready for me. Wow, they ship fast.. it's already on it's way. I was actually trying to figure out more information about the Z23 vs the Z17 models. So the 23's are carbon fiber ceramic vs the 17 are ceramic only. I guess with the carbon fiber pads there are a few cons: Louder, maybe more dust. Fades less, weighs less.. maybe less pedal feel, and definitely meant more for track. I guess I think I'm fine with the good 'ol ceramic.. we'll see. Last edited by rice_rocket88; 12-05-2022 at 10:41 AM.. |

Understood, thanks. A guy pulled out in front of me today and I was able to stop in time.. so technically mine are adequate. I'm just itching to get better than adequate... plus I have some new spacers to put on; need to rotate the tires anyway.. etc. I'm at about 45,k and I can't see well enough to know what I've got.. I'll check it when I do spacers.

I'm at 43k and on second set of pads still. I bought Feredos. They're sitting in the garage until the sensor gets tripped. Hoping to make it to winter so I can do it when I put on the winter setup

Can you expound on in what way you mean the discs were shot at your mileage?

I’m at 43k now. Rotors looked fine. Front pads are on second set and still at 5mm. Rear pads are the original and at 4mm.
I bought a set of front pads thinking it was time when I did the last oil change (yesterday) and was shocked I still had 5mm. Going to order rear pads and sensor and do all four at once before winter. |

What I guess I was really wondering is if they were beyond the point they could've been 'turned'?

Within the last couple of years I've had a set of rotors (for another brand car) come out of the box unfit for use due to excessive runout. The next set I purchased I just had my local auto parts store turn them before mounting. Cost like $20, only took them like 1/2 day, & were smooth as glass when I slapped them on. Shouldn't have to do this but sometimes it is what it is.

Welp. At 49k now. Got the rear pads need changing in 1100 miles. So 50k on rears. Not bad. Will order some tonight.
Trying to hold off on the fronts until winter tire changeover. Hopefully they make it another month or two. |

I've always felt the M35 brakes are very grabby, squealy and at times too sporty.
Has anyone replaced with non-M brake pads and discs? For example, would the regular s28i parts fit? Or are there less aggressive aftermarket brakes available for the M35? |

My daughter has always said the x2 brakes were so grabby that she wishes her car had them.
I bought Ferodo front pads and ATE rear pads. Will do rear pads next weekend. Still have some life left in front. |
