Switching my 225/50/R18 tires to a Low profile one, suggestions?
Hi everyone,
I have 4 inflated 225/50/R18 in my X1 2018 and I would like to have something more sporty, I guess that changing my tires from these all-season tires to a low-profile performance would make it, right? Do you know if needs to be a performance tire to low it from 50 to let's say 45 or even 35(don't know if exists or it is suitable for x1)? Anyone has already made this? Is it worth it? What would be the lower that I could do to not affect too much the comfort? Thanks! |

Are you trying to change the look of your car or the performance?
If performance just get some performance tires. If appearance, you’re going to want to jump up to 19 or 20 inch wheels to get the low profile look. You don’t want to just drop your 18s to a smaller aspect ratio using the same width tires. For ex. If you drop to 225/40/18, your tires will be 1.8” shorter. If you go to 245/45/18, it will only be .2” shorter but is a good size. You won’t get a low profile look though. |

Hey, pretty much appearance, I thought that performance tires by the theory are built in a low profile(aka some like 225/40/R18). So, do you think if I do something like that, without going to higher than R18 is going to look weird? Like, I like the look of my stock 225/50/R18 wheels, but I wish that it would be a little bit lower like from 50 to 40. I believe that changing to a higher RADIAL is too much change and expensive, right.?! |

I swapped out to 245/40 on 19x8.5 wheels. This way the overall diameter was nearly the same as OEM and it gives lower profile. I ditched the run flats and went with Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus too.

Nice, this is what I am looking for, and I am just curious when you set a wider wheel, does it affect the driveability or the fuel comsuption? |

I haven't seen a noticeable difference in fuel economy. I feel like the drive is improved. I can notice better steering response and overall better feel of the road. The Continentals are much better than the stock Pirelli's as well. My decision was based mostly on looks. I wasn't so worried about fuel economy and the better driving experience was just an added bonus I guess.

NICE! Looking good!
Those wheels look like TSW Pescara. What offset did you use? ET42? Thanks,

No. One of the UK models (LCI 2020) used to have them fitted on the production line if you specified it on the Sport model. Not the M Sport!

As mentioned. Do not put a low profile on your existing rims. The overall diameter will be wrong which can interfere with the wheel hitting your suspension at full lock. Plus it will lead to incorrect speedometer reading and affect the computers ability to properly adjust your awd system, ABS, and traction control.
You want a larger rim with a lower profile tire for a similar overall diameter. A wider / heavier tire will affect acceleration and fuel economy. It can in some conditions lead to better highway fuel economy. Wider tires (and wheels that stick out more than stock) will also lead to understeer. Staggered isn't recommended on our FWD/AWD vehicles. I do not recommend going with 19s in runflats or ultra high performance summers. The ride and road noise is punishing. Fine for 18s though. If going with 19's then go with a high performance all season. You'll still get a sporty ride but without the compromise of fast tire wear, road noise, and comfort. There will still be a bit of sidewall flex on turn in but it'll still be far better than what you're used to now. Stock for 19s is ET47 and only 7.5 width. ET42 will be flush at 7.5 but stick out a bit of 8" or wider rims. I have ET40 x 8" on 225 width rubber and they stick out a bit too much for my liking. I should've kept searching for ET42 at 7.5". |

Hi ZZZZ, how are you?
Sorry but the OEM 19" wheels are 8" wide (https://www.wheel-size.com/size/bmw/x1/2017/). We also have a user in the forum who installed 245 tires in OEM 19" wheels (https://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...1729957&page=2). I know it for sure because I'm also looking to replace my OEM 18" with 19" wheels, 8" or 8.5" wide. I was convinced to use P-Zero 245/40r19 run-flat tires, but now you are making me hesitate, haha. But at the same time, I want to keep using run-flat tires for safety. If I have a puncture, I don't need to stop the car to replace it. Trust me, here in Mexico is important... Quote:

And I totally understand the appeal of runflats and can't argue the merits. My x1 already has msport suspension and 19" wheels. With michelin runflats the ride is very choppy and loud. I sold those and put non rft Conti winters on my msport wheels and went aftermarket with michelin all season sports for the summer. The ride is pretty good now though there's quite a bit of sidewall flex on aggressive turns. I do keep a can of tire repair sealant in the trunk too. I've also had an F10 5 series which came with runflats which cracked my rims. (the stiff sidewalls are known for damaging rims) so I've had a bad experience there. E85 z4 also had a punishing ride from the factory so I ended up downsizing those wheels and going non rft which made the world of difference. That car was made when bmw was just migrating to rft tires and haven't figured out their suspension tuning yet. |
