Folding mirror passes over the stopping point
Hello,
I have a problem with the left wing mirror and I would like to ask you for some help / guide / ideas. My car is a 18d 2016, sDrive, LHD. The mirror is electrical folding, heated with autodip. The problem is related to the electrical folding part. So, after manually pushing the mirror towards the front of the car (as I usually do after washing it), when I pushed it back to the normal position I found that it's not blocking where it should. Opening a door, made the mirror to move forward towards the front of the car, by the motor (like I previously did by hand). At this point the mirror was able to fold itself by the motor. But when tried to unfold it by pressing the door button, it moved againg all the way forward, toward the front of the car, jumping over the normal stopping point. After a few moves like that, the mirror stopped to fold and unfold, but the motor is making the specific noise (but for a longer time comparing with the right mirror). Did anyone knows where could be the problem? The blocking pin or the motor gears? Could it be repaired without replacing the whole mirror arm? Regards, Stefan |

It sounds like the mirror's motor controlling the fold feature may be damaged from pushing it manually in a manner that it wasn't designed to be in, or the gears are out of sync with what the car believes is the current position.
I suspect the repair may require some disassembly and diagnosis first to get a good picture of the problem. |

The mirror can be pushed towards the front of the car, by hand, and reversed to the normal operating position also by hand, without damaging it. It's designed to move like that.
For sure it has to be taken out and disassembled. I hope to find the gears just "out of sync", but not damaged. Anyone who disassembled the mirror? Some instructions? |

Ugh. Common problem with BMW mirrors. I've had this happen on previous cars.
First thing is to try closing the mirror by button, manually opening and trying to close again. This should resync the gear. If not then the stopper is broken and you'll need a new mirror. Problem is at 15kmh the mirrors automatically try to open and will rotate to the front of the car. You'll have to code this feature out if u don't replace the mirror, or snip the wires for the rotate function and it'll still work manually. |

Thanks for your answer, ZZZZ.
Somehow I managed to resync again the mirror and now it's working again. It's working well when closing, but it jumps when opening. I guess the blocking pin is stuck and it's obstructing the smooth open movement. As I saw on YouTube, it's possible to reach the pin (there are a few methods) and to lubricate it. But it's really not an easy job... As regarding the wires cut, I'll do that as a last solution. |
